It was 2010, and the world was stepping into the second decade of the new millennium. In reflection, the Trinity College Choir made a move to expand the circumference of its wider music circle to much greater diameter. The Choir springing up from its roots in the inception of the school with a rich historical choral tradition, broke fresh grounds blending its traditional choral musicality with contemporaneity. And thus, “Mind Your Music” was born.
One of the chief objectives of “Mind Your Music” was to sustain the live performance of versatile choral music for the enjoyment and appreciation of listeners and performers alike. It is through the Chorister’s love and commitment to music that the Choir was able to make “Mind Your Music” a possibility and evolve with time despite growing constraints in upholding artistic values in the present times.
Centred around a theme, “Mind Your Music” is a paradigm of the currentness of choral music enriched with diversity and versatility. Intending to broaden the appreciation of the music of both the Choristers and the audience, ” Mind Your Music” covers a wide array of music spanning through the ages of ranging genres. Even though the Trinity College Choir is centralized around the chapel in the performance of Christian music, for the “Mind Your Music” concert, the Choir mainly performs secular music. However, keeping up with its Anglican Christian Choral tradition, the Choir never fails to have spiritual works in the “Mind Your Music” repertoire. Throughout the years, the Choir mounted under themes, “Plain song to Pop”, “Rhymes to Rhapsody”, and “Musicals to Movies”, which was able to captivate the audience filling their hearts and souls with the euphoria of music. The choirmaster’s enthralling stories on the history of the music before each performance have led the audience to better apprehension through comprehension.
After three years of waiting, the Trinity College Choir will set to stage “Mind Your Music 2022”, which coincides with the sesquicentenary of both the Choir and the College and undoubtedly will be a tribute and memorabilia to mark the anniversary. This year, intending to elate the audience with the mellow melodies of jazz and go down a memory lane filled with nostalgia over the jingles that many grew up with, the Choir presents “Mind Your Music” under the theme “Jazz to Jingles”. The sleazy Jazz beats and upbeat music will make it irresistable for the audience to snap and clap and join along with the Choir in the enjoyment of this musical evening.
With live music from Piano, Keyboard, Guitar and drums accompanying the Choir in the singing of Afro American Spiritual, Baroque pop jingle, rhythm and blues from the 40s, doo-wops from the 50s, pop-jazz from the British invasion of the 60s, jazz-rock from the 70s, reggae from the ’80s, and Broadway show tune music from the teenies and much more music that stood the test of time. The variety of music covering a wide era will undoubtedly entertain the diverse audience with the amalgamation of ranging themes, styles and forms of singing.
Songs about Moses of Egypt, King George III to jazz and jingles of the 20th century, “Mind Your Music” – “Jingles to Jazz” will feature Freddie Mercury, Louis Armstrong, Bee Gees, Mills Brothers, The Beatles, Henry Purcell, UB40, The Manhatten transfer and other renowned musicians.
“Mind Your Music” will forge a spirit of togetherness that will assuredly satisfy the mission of the Choir as it looks to the future in creating a society with a qualitative taste in music, finding richness and fulfilment in the singing and interpretation of the inspiring and wonderful music of the masters.
