Prize Giving – 2023

Reviewed by Thehas Dayaratne (Web content team)

On the 16th of February 2023, Trinity College turned its focus towards a significant event in its annual calendar: the highly anticipated annual Prize Giving of 2023.

Aimed at celebrating the highest achievers of Trinity College Kandy, against the backdrop of its Sesquicentennial Anniversary, both Middle and Upper school of the college joined in the event, reinstating a tradition observed in earlier times.

Mr. Rajiv De Silva, a distinguished figure in pharmaceuticals, business, and entrepreneurship, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Accompanying him was his wife, Julie Yancovich. Mr. De Silva, an alumnus of Trinity College, delivered a deeply insightful and motivational speech, drawing upon the countless lessons he learned during his school days at Trinity. His words resonated profoundly with the attendees, serving as a true inspiration to many Trinitians.

Following Mr. De Silva’s address, the prize winners eagerly collected their awards, presented by both Mr. De Silva and Mrs. Yancovich.

The proceedings commenced with the customary opening prayer, followed by the Principal’s comprehensive report on the momentous year of 2023.  The report featured notable additions, including reiterations of the college’s commitment to excellence and innovation in education.

Amongst the highlights of the Prize Giving were the announcements of The Best All Round Student of the Middle School and the recipient of  The Ryde Gold Medal. Master S. Dilrukshan was recognized as The Best All Round Student of the Middle School for his outstanding performance both academically and extracurricularly. The highly prestigious Ryde Gold Medal, the epitome of achievement for Trinitians, was awarded to Master Abidh Jameel, celebrating his exemplary dedication and accomplishments.

The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Master Abidh Jameel, who also made the traditional request for a holiday on the Friday following the Prize Giving. However, the school received the extra bonus of a mid-term holiday of 4 days, from the 7th to 10th  March 2024.

The ceremony reached its conclusion with the appointment of Master Rushen Bandaranayake as the Senior Prefect for 2024 by the Principal Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, signalling a new era of leadership and excellence for Trinity College Kandy.

  • "By ten in the morning, Kandy had turned unexpectedly cool, a gentle drizzle veiling the grounds of the chapel of Trinity College, Kandy. Yet, nothing could diminish the quiet magnificence of this sacred space, an ode to Sri Lanka’s rich architectural corpus.

As one gazes at it in awe, a clear realization emerges: religious worship and spiritual fervor are not confined to established architectural schools. At a time when many churches on the island adopted European Gothic or Classical styles, this chapel stands apart as wholly indigenous. It departs from inherited conventions to root a faith brought from the West within a sanctuary modelled in Sri Lanka’s own heritage design language.

To the connoisseur of art and history, the Chapel of Trinity College, Kandy, is profoundly awe-inspiring. Standing outside, the mind travels easily across centuries: Embekke comes to mind, as do the royal audience hall of Polonnaruwa and the open-pillared structures of Anuradhapura."
