Reaffirming Trinity’s Vision for Globally Relevant, Holistic Education
On the 19th of June 2025, the Trinity College International Qualifications (TCKIQ) Section proudly hosted its 8th annual Open Day at the TCKIQ premises, bringing together students and parents interested in pursuing Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Level (IAL) Qualifications at Trinity.
The event welcomed the presence of distinguished guests from the field, including Premila Paulraj, Director of Market Growth in South Asia, Pearson, Erandi Pandithasekara, Regional Development Manager, Pearson, Thariq Nazeer, Head of Business Development, Exams, British Council and Kusummittha De Alwis, Test Day Manager, Examination Services at British Council. These well experienced individuals not only within the Edexcel curriculum, but in the field of education as a whole, provided valuable insights which painted a clear picture in the minds of both the students and parents of the future they await.
Following registrations, proceedings began at 12.30 with an opening prayer led by the Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Shelton Samadanam, which was followed by a welcome address by Mr. Jason Wijeyeweera, Headmaster of TCKIQ. The Principal, Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, then addressed the gathering, outlining the Trinity’s vision for international education and reaffirming its commitment to providing a well-rounded, globally relevant academic experience.
Next, to soothe the minds of all those present, a short entertainment session was conducted. Firstly, a few students studying at TCKIQ melted the hearts of the audience singing Riptide by Vance Joy to a jolly guitar tune. Another set of students from the Trinity College Choir then dove into a Sinhala classic before moving back into the programme.
A keynote presentation delivered by Premila Paulraj of Pearson Edexcel offered an engaging overview of the curriculum, and the special features of the International Advanced Level syllabus, including immense flexibility and passion driven subject choices. She also shed light on the countless opportunities students may have following completion, including a few examples of Trinity alumni. The session also emphasized the importance of holistic, school-based education up to the age of 18 and advised against early exits from formal schooling.
To then reassure all the parents present at the event, a parent of an alumnus and a new student of TCKIQ addressed the gathering, sharing her opinions on the manner in which the IAL program at Trinity College allowed her elder son to not only easily manage his extra-curriculars, sports and studies, but also encouraged him to do so with passion and peace of mind.
Adding a student voice to the event, Master Amru Alwis a current TCKIQ student, shared his personal journey with the IAL program at Trinity, offering an authentic perspective that resonated strongly with the audience.
The Open Day concluded with an open forum where parents and students had the opportunity to interact with TCKIQ staff and Pearson Edexcel representatives, gaining clarity on the curriculum, subject options, and future pathways.
The International Advanced Level Open Day 2025 proved to be a meaningful and informative experience for all who attended. The College extends its gratitude to the College Executive Council, the Principal, the Headmaster of TCKIQ, faculty, and the student body for their dedication in organizing another successful event that strengthens Trinity’s reputation as a center of academic excellence.
