Trinity Students Shine at International Carnatic Music Competition

By Dilrukshan Sureshkumar (Carnatic Music Society)

Two talented students from Trinity College Kandy have brought international recognition to the school through their exceptional performances at Nadhasangamam – Season 3, a prestigious Carnatic music competition organised by the 98th Executive Committee of the Tamil Society, University of Peradeniya.

The competition, held in three rounds, featured participants from across the country and internationally, with categories divided by age and genre. The final results were officially announced on the 26th of March 2025.

Dilrukshan Sureshkumar,  competing in the Senior Category (ages 15–20), secured First Place in the Film Music – Instrumental section. He performed a powerful cinematic piece on the veena—an instrument known for its complexity and depth.

Meanwhile, Sai Akshath Navaratnaraja, competing in the Intermediate Category (ages 10–14), earned Second Place in the Carnatic Vocal section. His vocal performance displayed a remarkable command of traditional Carnatic ragas.

Both students have demonstrated a strong commitment to Carnatic music at Trinity, a field that, though starting with a small group of students, has achieved noteworthy success. The support from the school, their teachers, and the community has played a key role in their achievements. This recognition on an international stage reflects not only their personal dedication but also the growth of Carnatic music at TCK, with more students now finding their passion for this ancient art form.

As one of the recipients of this award, Dilrukshan (the writer of this article) shares, “The journey towards this achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my teachers, fellow students, and my family. Carnatic music, though a relatively small community within the school, has provided a platform for us to showcase our talents and express ourselves. I’m grateful to Trinity College for fostering an environment that encourages artistic pursuits alongside academic excellence.”

These achievements are a testament to the ongoing development of Carnatic music at Trinity College and the dedication of the students who contribute to its success. TCK congratulates Dilrukshan and Sai Akshath on their outstanding performances and wishes them continued success in their musical journeys.
