Since its establishment in 2018, the Hill Country Model United Nations (HCMUN) has proudly served as the primary regional conference in the Central Province. Organized by the MUN clubs of leading schools in the region, it carries the endorsement of the Sri Lanka Model United Nations (SLMUN). Our mission is to introduce and nurture the world of Model United Nations in the scenic Hill Country through an array of workshops and outreach programs. The conference takes place in Kandy, welcoming over 200 delegates from nearly 15 different schools. While Colombo has long claimed the limelight for Model United Nations, we, at HCMUN, recognize the immense talent and untapped potential of the Hill Country. It is our responsibility to ensure that every delegate's voice is heard and valued.
The inaugural Model United Nations conference took place in the United States of America in 1949. Since then, MUN has grown into a vital platform for gathering and educating youth about global issues worldwide. In Sri Lanka, the pioneering force behind MUN programs is the Sri Lanka Model United Nations (SLMUN), founded in 2008. As one of Asia's largest student-led United Nations simulations, SLMUN brings together over 100 schools and 800+ delegates annually. Our primary goal is to cultivate diplomacy and negotiation skills among the youth, nurturing them to become fair and effective leaders. We wholeheartedly encourage young individuals from all backgrounds and ages to rise up and make a difference. As we approach the milestone of 16 years since the inception of the SLMUN conference in 2023, we provide a platform for passionate individuals to address pressing global issues, including poverty, climate change, inequality, and humanitarian crises. Participants gain invaluable opportunities to share their insights while developing crucial skills such as leadership, analytical thinking, public relations, complex problem-solving, and public speaking.
In 2016, Model United Nations (MUN) took its roots at Trinity College when the club branched off from the Trinity College Literary Association. Since then, TCMUN has not only participated but also excelled in conferences. Our mission is to provide a healthy and dynamic environment for the development of future leaders, instilling in them sound discipline and character based on the principles of MUN and Trinity. Our objective is to support students in achieving excellence both during and beyond conferences. We envision producing excellent Trinitians who can actively engage in respectable debates, fruitful discussions, and meaningful diplomacy, fostering an environment where diverse perspectives are embraced and positive interactions thrive within the realm of MUN.
In the year 2020, Mrs. N. De Silva and Mrs. R. Uduwela led college students from Mahamaya Girls' College to participate in Diplomat's MUN at the BMICH, providing them with an opportunity to experience diplomatic procedures similar to the United Nations. Inspired by this, senior students established the Mahamaya Model United Nations club. This club is open to students from grades 6 to 13 who have a passion for diplomacy, politics, and want to develop their public speaking skills. The Model United Nations club of Mahamaya Girls' College is dedicated to nurturing the diplomatic skills of younger generations and providing them with a platform to express their ideas on current global issues. Our vision is to empower young women to become leaders in the diplomatic world, fostering well-spoken individuals from our school who can make a positive impact on society.
