Trinity College Kandy, based on the culture of Christian values, teaches students more than just a textbook based education where students are taught values which mould them into gentlemen. But in this school students soon get accustomed to it and bond deeply not only the walls and structures of it but also its rich history and deep brotherhood and a sense of “family”. And an important part of this family is the support staff.
Describing the amount of gratitude that the College has for the staff that makes it thrive and succeed is immeasurable to begin with. Over the years we see day by day increasingly how students and the staff co- exist with one another, how pleasant it is to see the smiles of laughter, exchanging of sincerity and the growth of students because of that exposure to love, care and kindness combined with a strong sense of belonging.
The moment a student in grade one enters through the gates of Trinity, he is part of that family. As little and easily irritable children, we found that the difference between our home and school life was almost nonexistent and the life led both at home and in school grew to be quite similar to each other. Along the way as growing boys, we learned through our faults and shortcomings how to sit, dress, compose ourselves and enact the gusto of a gentleman, but apart from those what was mostly taught was our sense of respect for eachother, kindness, sharing, being thoughtful and obedient. Through the exemplary gestures of our support staff often students would hear the simple phrase “ put your chairs up before leaving” teaching us to be considerate to those who are there to maintain the cleanliness of the classroom after hours, The selfless act of giving, being grateful and the important of a simple greeting to make someone’s day a the little drops of blessings that the staff receives from a students, and in return was always a heartfelt smile.
Trinity’s foundation is laid on strong beliefs, humility, selflessness, sharing, generosity, and a strong family bond. Trinity has also consisted and produced individuals who are humble, selfless and born-to-be leaders. Their appreciation of college would always lie in the unbroken family bond it consisted of. Based on Christian values, these kind gestures and attitudes of students are there to inspire the world and the nation. Always leading by examples and fighting for what is right, all of which is taught in the upbringing of student in the kindergarten and junior school, the definition of hard labour is no mystery to the students, the various “dirty work”, unbearable heavy lifting and cleaning is witnessed by students on a daily basis.
Ever since a young age you’re taught to respect and openly communicate with the workers. The ‘uncles’, ‘aunties’ or ‘achchis’ as we’d fondly refer to them, are not alienated but rather celebrated for the work they do. A sense community exists amongst the student body and support staff members. For us, they aren’t random individuals in uniform clothing. Each person has their own name, story and character. From the earnest nature of Jayamanna uncle to Jothi’s comedic gists, students engage in amicable conversations with the workers. They impact us in grounding the realities of life, diluting the elitist viewpoint to one that is understanding and empathetic. The various short chats with the support staff happen during the intervals and more often than the students would like to admit, during their time spent standing outside the classroom for not bringing their books or having incomplete books, and very rarely when they would generously advise mischievous young youths not to cut classes. But all in good love and parenthood, wanting the students to be a better version of themselves each day. Very considerate and minor gestures made by the students make major contrasts in the workfield for the support staff. Students at the end of their school lives learn to appreciate each individual and treat them with immense respect, so that contributions should not be left unacknowledged.
The support staff is an integral part of the Trinity family. From the moment you walk in through the school gates, seldom are the days you wouldn’t see the robust outfit of labourers toiling away. Growing up at Trinity, you are ingrained to a culture of respecting and dignifying those who provide a service to society. At the dawn of Labour Day, one must stop to look back and admire the hard working classes of society; the individuals who uphold the sustenance of our everyday lives. It is with the virtues of gratefulness, humbleness and admiration, that we write this to appreciate selfless service.
