Trinity Triumphs at the Central Province Weightlifting Championship 2023

In a resounding display of strength and skill, the Trinity College Weightlifting squad continues to dominate the year 2023, once again seizing victory at the Central Province Weightlifting Championship. This exciting sports encounter, organised by the Department of Education, unfolded on the 24th and 25th of August at Dharmaraja College, Kandy. 

With a performance that left onlookers in awe, the team clinched an impressive total of 18 medals. Among this illustrious haul, shone  10 Gold Medals, 6 Silver Medals, and 2 Bronze Medals, solidifying Trinity College’s supremacy in the weightlifting arena. 

Category Champions: 

Under the spotlight were the extraordinary individuals who secured the top spot in their age and weight categories, stamping  their names in weightlifting history: 

Under 17 Standouts: 

Thisal Rajapakse, emerging triumphant in the 55kg division 

Nethil Tennekoon, conquering the 67kg challenge 

Yasan Kavsidu, a force to be reckoned with at 81kg 

Sadil Angammana, demonstrating prowess at 102kg 

Ravishka Dissanayaka, leaving a mark in the 102kg+ realm 

Under 20 Champions: 

Jason Peter, dominating the 73kg category 

Shabeer Ahamed, impressing at 96kg 

Sherwain Wavita, showcasing strength at 102kg 

Yahadasun Ratnayake, overpowering at 109+kg 

Hashendra Wijethilake, emerging victorious in the 109kg division 

Additionally, notable Silver Medallists proved their mettle in their respective categories: 

Under 17 Silver Awardees: 

Sithnuka Ratnayake, displaying prowess at 61kg 

Chanithu Ranathunge, gracefully lifting in the 73kg class 

Pudam Dissanayake, securing silver at 96kg 

Under 20 Silver Awardees: 

Manula Dullewe, shining at 61kg 

Thimalsha Paranayapa, exhibiting strength at 67kg 

Ammar Zaffarullah, an outstanding presence at 81kg 

Furthermore, recognition is due to the impressive 3rd place finishers in their events: 

Under 20 Bronze Achievers: 

J. Haakesh, securing the 61kg position 

Fadhi Fazal, demonstrating skill in the 73kg division 

The championship victory was nothing short of monumental, as the Trinity College team outshone their competitors with a substantial lead. Notably, Master Yasan Kavsidu earned the esteemed title of ‘Best Weightlifter’ in the under 17 category, a testament to his exceptional abilities. 

The team extends their heartfelt gratitude to Coach Mr. M. Wijerathne and the indefatigable MIC Mr. K. Galagoda for their unwavering support in guiding the team towards peak performance. With weights lifted and records shattered, Trinity College’s weightlifting prowess continues to illuminate the sporting spirit at Trinity!
