My Lord bishop Nishantha Fernando – Bishop of Kurunagala, Engineer Nahil Wijesuriya – the Chief Guest of the Prize Giving 2025, members of the Board of Governors, the Chaplain, members of the College Executive Council, members of the College Management Team, members of the Prize Giving Committee, eminent members of tutorial staff, donors distinguished guests, parents, old boys, ladies and gentlemen and my dear students, welcome to the Prize Giving 2025.
The academic year 2025 has highlighted the transformative impact of collaboration. Throughout the year, we have seen students uplift their peers, parents and educators build deeper connections, and the Trinity community demonstrate collective strength in the face of many challenges. Today’s celebration of excellence and achievement recognizes not only individual accomplishments, but also the shared determination that defines Trinity.
Reflecting on this past year, I’m especially gratified by how Trinity has embodied a vital truth: resilience flourishes when we support one another rather than struggle in isolation. Our students have displayed impressive flexibility and perseverance, while our dedicated faculty has worked in concert to provide every student with the foundation needed to succeed. As we honour the outstanding accomplishments, let us renew our dedication to fostering an environment where excellence, creativity, and belonging enable each person to achieve their fullest capabilities. Standing before you as the 20th Principal, now in my 6th and final year of service, I present with deep gratitude to Divine Providence the Annual School Review 2025.
On 12th May 1966, late Mr. C.J. Oorloff, an illustrious principal of Trinity College of revered memory, signed a leaving certificate, on which he remarked “has more than average intelligence and an aptitude for things mechanical. Keenly interested in several departments in school’s life, he has always been loyal and law-abiding“. Today, after 6 decades, the possessor of that leaving certificate is in our midst as an entrepreneur of the highest caliber, a philanthropist, a social critique and above all a passionate Trinitian. Eng. Nahil Wijesuriya is a proud old boy of Trinity College, Kandy from the class of 1963. During his school years, he distinguished himself both academically and in sports, representing the College 1st XI Cricket Team in 1963 and playing Rugby at Under-17 level. His education at Trinity laid a strong foundation for a lifelong career marked by visionary instinct, professionalism, and excellence. So much for his “more than average intelligence”.
A qualified Marine Engineer, Mr. Wijesuriya sailed with vessels of the British Shipping Company, P&O Lines, and the Ceylon Shipping Corporation, as sailing Chief Engineer in all the ships including being the 1st local chief engineer of the biggest tanker MT Tammanna. He began his professional journey in 1964 as a Marine Engineering apprentice at Walker Sons Ltd., and through dedication and expertise, rose to become the Chief Engineer of Colombo Dockyard in 1977.
A true innovator and entrepreneur, Eng. Wijesuriya founded East West Information Systems Ltd., Sri Lanka’s first IBM Personal Computer dealership (now known as EWIS), and the television company ETV, which later evolved into Swarnawahini. His ventures extended into offshore bunkering, ship salvage, and towage, yielding significant commercial success. He also made notable contributions to the hospitality sector, being involved in landmark projects such as the Marriott Hotel, Weligama, and the Intercontinental Hotel, Colombo.
Coming from a distinguished family of medical professionals, with six doctors in his immediate family, Eng. Wijesuriya combines the precision of an engineer with a deep-rooted sense of compassion and service.
Beyond his professional achievements, Eng. Wijesuriya is widely admired for his exceptional philanthropy and his unwavering belief in the transformative power of education. His principal commitment has always been to Trinity College, Kandy. Over the past 35 years, his contributions include the Old Trinitians’ Sports Club at Asgiriya, the first bowling machine in Sri Lanka, the College Computer Centre, and numerous other initiatives—for him, it is always about, “Rising Up to the Occasion.” Most recently, he donated Rs. 106.7 million towards the construction of the Trinity College Badminton Complex.
In 2023, Eng. Wijesuriya made a historic donation of Rs. 1 billion to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital Little Hearts Project, one of the largest private contributions ever made to a public healthcare initiative in Sri Lanka, inspired and encouraged by his sister, Dr. Mrs. Karalliedde, a Consultant Pediatrician.
His philanthropic contributions include the Rs. 270 million to Bishop’s College, in memory of his late wife, Mrs. Roshanne Wijesuriya, for the construction of a six-storied Advanced Level building. Rs. 250 million to Ananda College, Colombo, to complete the Centre of Excellence for STEAM education. Rs. 600 million to St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia and most recently, Rs. 100 million to Girls’ High School, Kandy, for the construction of a swimming pool complex. In addition, he annually sponsors scholarships for many students from low-income backgrounds studying Marine Engineering at Sri Lankan universities, as a tribute to his profession. The inspiration for this unparalleled generosity is Mr. Wijesuriya’s beloved mother, late Mrs. Agnes Wijesuriya. May the Triune God grant her the eternal reward.
These extraordinary acts of generosity reflect not only Eng. Wijesuriya’s success, but also his firm belief that education is the greatest investment in shaping the future of our nation. As a Trinitian, he continues to uphold the values instilled by his alma mater and remains an inspiration to future generations. Allow me to quote from the preface of the biography of our chief guest titled “Simply Nahil: A Maveric with a Midas Touch”:
What strikes me most in my deep-ended curiosity of this unassuming, kind and humble man is his analysis of life. He is able to perceive the simple looking through the lens of life that shows up macro cosmic. His analysis of contemporary concerns and larger-than-life situations has never seemed to faze him, given his brilliant mind. He recalls, with a chuckle, that even as a child he saw the world in technicolour. For him, the blacks and whites of reality were juxtaposed with the richness and vibrancy of the reds, yellows and blues of his imagination.
Today, the Red – Yellow – Blue honours you sir. My lord bishop, esteemed guests, ladies and gentlemen and students, I present to you the chief guest of Prize Giving 2025, Eng. Nahil Wijesuriya.
Trinity Academy consists of two qualifications: National and International. At the GCE [Advanced Level] Examination 2024 held in February 2025, 66.9% [2023 – 64%] of our students reached university entrance eligibility, with 18 students obtaining the elusive 3A grading. We congratulate all the students who excelled at these intensely competitive public exams. In the Trinity College International Qualification – International Advanced Level achieved 83.38% passrate and the pioneering International – GCSE batch reached a grand 98% pass rate at the Pearson-Edexcel examinations. We extend our congratulations to the students with the best results. During the year 2025, we witnessed significant movements in our faculty with 26 members leaving the staff. A special note of thanks to Mrs. Anju Dissanayake [15], Mrs. C.P.K. Wijewardena [28], Mrs. Indu Gunawardena [15], Mr. R.T.K. Gangahagedara [25], Mrs. Nalika Gunaratne [32], Mrs. Iromi Rathnayake [28], Mrs. Chryshanthi Surendrakumar [27], and Mrs. Warna De Silva [33] for their dedicated service spanning over fifteen years. We also thank Mr. Wasantha Kumara of TCK International Qualification. 13 new members joined Trinity College Academic staff. I thank the academic staff for their generosity in molding the Trinitians entrusted to them.
Currently, we are on a reform agenda. Whilst it is regrettable that the proposed critical education reforms were paused, Trinity College will continue to pursue her own reforms, having state policies as the benchmark. During the last five years, we have taken on board the key Components of the reforms: curriculum modernization with an emphasis on skills development, professional teacher development, infrastructure improvements, language education and community engagement. However, the untamed proliferation of shadow education and the blatant violation of policies related to mandatory primary and secondary education continue to undermine our institutional integrity, professional will, and personal commitment. Hence, a reset of the national education system is not an option but an imperative.
Religious & Value Education Domain plays a vital role in developing the moral character, ethical principles, and spiritual growth of our Trinitian community. This year, we meaningfully celebrated numerous faith-centered events, including the Buddhist Student Movement’s 50th annual Pirith ceremony and Sangagatha Dakshinawa, the Islamic Students Movement Day, the Hindu Students Movement’s Vaani Vizha, the College Choir’s Service of Nine Lessons & Carols and Cross and Triumph of Christ , the Student Christian Movement Day, and Trinity Monday. During the year, we revived the Student Christian Movement and the Servers’ Guild. A special note of thanks to Rev. Fr. Shelton Samadanam, who served Trinity College as the Chaplain for 4 years. He left his Trinity mission at the end of 2025. We thank him for his committed service. We welcome Rev. Fr. Sanjaya Gamage, our new Chaplain, to the Trinity community. It is with a heart filled with adoration and praise that I announce the completion of the Trinity College Chapel Restoration Project. I wish to thank all the donors, consultants, technicians, and the advisory and oversight committee for their generosity and professionalism.
The Trinity College Co-Curricular Enrichment Initiative
The Trinity College Co-Curricular Enrichment Initiative (TCCEI), launched during the T150 Sesquicentennial celebrations in 2022, has continued to flourish as a comprehensive framework for managing and developing co-curricular activities. This systematic approach has successfully organized existing clubs and societies under structured governance while integrating emerging student-led initiatives with robust institutional support. By aligning co-curricular activities with educational outcomes and ensuring sustainable development through proper resource allocation, TCCEI has elevated student leadership from basic activity management to strategic thinking.
Currently, TCCEI oversees 35 active programs systematically organized for middle school and upper school students in Grade 6 and above. The initiative has introduced nine major inter-house competitions to engage students across all houses, creating multiple participation pathways that ensure every student finds meaningful development opportunities. This comprehensive structure reflects TCCEI’s commitment to the continuous improvement of standards in co-curricular engagement. During 2025, we also established the “Pilapitiya Endowment Fund for Co-Curricular Activities” through a generous grant donated by Mrs. Nirmalene Seneviratne Pilapitiya in memory of her late husband Mr. Nawarathne Bandara Herath Pilapitiya. T150 + 4 [2026]: as we navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of global primary and secondary education, Trinity College stands at a pivotal juncture in 2026. The educational paradigm worldwide has shifted decisively toward holistic development that balances academic rigor with essential life competencies. Our commitment to Trinity’s tripartite educational philosophy—knowledge and information, abilities and aptitudes, and values and attitudes—positions us well to meet these challenges. Central to this journey are our rearticulated core values embodied in the ISER: Integrity, Service, Excellence, and Resilience.
The 21st century demands that we embrace transformative changes sweeping through primary and secondary education globally. Digital integration has evolved beyond mere technological adoption to become fundamental to how we facilitate learning and critical thinking. Student wellbeing and social-emotional development now rightfully occupy the center of educational discourse, recognizing that academic achievement flourishes only when students are mentally, emotionally, and physically supported. Future-ready competencies—adaptability, collaborative problem-solving, digital fluency, and innovative thinking—must be cultivated alongside traditional academic disciplines to prepare our students for careers and challenges we cannot yet fully envision. Moreover, environmental stewardship and sustainable development principles must permeate our curriculum, equipping Trinitians to be responsible for global citizens confronting climate realities.
Our vision for 2026 and beyond embraces these global imperatives while remaining firmly rooted in Trinity’s distinguished heritage. The introduction of cutting-edge facilities—our STEM & Robotics Laboratory, refurbished learning environments, and notably the new Pallekele Rugby Stadium—represents our tangible commitment to providing comprehensive educational experiences. Yet infrastructure alone cannot fulfill our mission. We must intentionally cultivate and deepen the Trinity ethos among both students and staff, ensuring that every member of our community embodies the values that have defined this institution for generations.
This collective endeavour requires unwavering unity among all Trinity stakeholders—students, parents, staff, old boys, and the broader community. The stability and continued excellence of Trinity College rests not on any single individual or group, but on our shared responsibility and collaborative commitment. Each stakeholder must recognize their vital role in preserving Trinity’s legacy while boldly advancing its mission.
Today’s ceremony celebrates not merely individual achievements in curricular and co-curricular domains, but the collective strength of the Trinity community and the boundless potential before us. As we honour our students’ accomplishments, let us renew our dedication to fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity, inclusivity, ethical leadership, and lifelong learning. My deepest aspiration is that Trinity continues to empower every student to discover and realize their full potential, producing graduates who are not only academically accomplished but morally grounded, socially conscious, and equipped to contribute meaningfully to our nation and world.
