Review by Menul Bandara (Secretary, Natural History and Heritage Society)
On 7 March 2026, the Natural History and Heritage Society of Trinity College, Kandy completed Phase 1 of the Menikdena Archaeological Reserve Development Project. This initiative involved replacing 31 faded and weathered name boards to better identify archaeological ruins and tree species, ensuring visitors can fully appreciate the site’s historical and ecological significance.
Over time, many existing signs had become damaged by weathering, making it difficult for visitors to identify the site’s heritage and diverse plant life. Recognising the importance of clear signage in an educational environment, the society prepared and installed durable new boards across the reserve. These now mark key structures and various tree species within the arboretum, enhancing the experience for visitors and contributing to greater awareness of the site’s significance.
Following careful planning, members of the society visited the reserve to install the boards at designated locations. The completion of this phase improves the reserve’s facilities and serves as a foundation for future development under the broader project. Looking ahead, Phase 2 of the project will focus on the refurbishment of the existing sanitary facilities, further expanding the society’s contribution to the reserve.
The society extends its sincere gratitude to the Principal, Vice Principal, Co-Vice Principal, Mr Wasana Dissanayake (Director – TCCEI), Mrs Maheeka Jayasekara (TIC), and Mr Sahana Vajirasena for their support and guidance.
The society looks forward to continuing its work in the upcoming phases of the Menikdena Archaeological Reserve Development Project, further contributing to the conservation and public appreciation of this heritage site.
