The English debating team of Trinity College recently won 3rd place in the K.M. De Lanerolle Debating Championship 2019, organised by Kingswood College English literary association, now in its 14th year.
The debates were held from 19th January to 9th February 2019 at the Kingswood College premises.
After overthrowing St. Anthony’s Girls College Kandy in the quarter finals, Trinity lost to Kandy Girls’ High School in a tightly contested semi-final debate. In the 3rd place play-off the Trinity team was awarded the victory after St. Anthony’s College Kandy conceded, announcing a last minute walkover.
The team were:
- Shafni Wazil – [Captain] – 1st speaker
- Rahul Jayasinghe – 2nd speaker
- Dulina Herath – 3rd speaker
- Yoosuf Zuhry – 4th speaker
- Janidu Jayasekara – reserve
Master Yoosuf Zuhry, Trinity’s whip speaker (front row on the left in the image above), was also awarded 2nd place for the ‘Best Speaker‘ of the tournament.
