The Cycling Club of TCK embarked on an exhilarating journey as they collaborated with the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital on their annual Children’s Day Ride on 1st of October 2023.
The sun had begun to cast its golden rays as the clock struck 8 in the morning. Cyclists young and old, enthusiastically gathered at the hospital’s main entrance, eagerly awaiting the commencement of the ride. It was a delightful and a pleasant sight to see students from Trinity College come together to celebrate an all-time favourite past time of childhood: cycling.
The route chosen for this memorable ride was picturesque. Participants pedalled from the hospital’s main entrance, weaving through the charming streets of Peradeniya, and finally reaching their destination, the Kandy City Center (KCC).
As they treadled along, the cyclists were entertained by traditional dancers, a vibrant symbol of Sri Lankan culture, captivating all with their mesmerizing performances.
The dancers, with their graceful movements and melodious songs, transcended language barriers to convey a powerful message – the sheer enthusiasm of cycling and the paramount noteworthiness of safeguarding our environment.
Amidst the rhythmic beats of music and drums, in a spectacular display of colours, it was impossible not to feel uplifted and inspired. The message of cherishing the environment, wrapped in the festivities of Children’s Day, left a lasting impression on everyone present. It was a reminder that the simple act of cycling can play a pivotal role in reducing our carbon footprint and preserving the beauty of our planet for future generations.
Of course, a celebration like this wouldn’t be complete without some well-deserved refreshments. The Kandy Cycling Club graciously organised a delightful spread for all attendees. As the riders savoured their treats, promoting animated chatter, sharing the joy of participating in such a heartwarming event.
This event was not just a ride; it was a journey of pride, filled with cultural richness, and an important reminder of our responsibility towards the environment.
It was a day when the spirit of childhood and a mutual concern for nature blended harmoniously, leaving indelible memories in the hearts of all who attended.
As we look back on this remarkable day, let us be inspired to continue cycling, spreading awareness, and promoting the need for a greener planet: One Pedal at A Time.
