On the 8th of August, the Senior Scout Troop embarked on their first annual hike since 2018, marking a crucial turning point for the Troop. Led by Troop Leader Mast. Kaveen Senanayake, the senior troop of 25 eager members set out on this much-anticipated adventure.
Departing from school at 5:20 am, our first stop was at the Bambarakiriella Bridge. The serene surroundings set a perfect tone for the day ahead. We then made our way to the Riverston Hike Trail in Matale, where we enjoyed a hearty breakfast enveloped in the cool morning air. The trail, surrounded by lush greenery, hinted at the challenges to come.
As we began our climb, the early morning mist was wrapped around the mountain, shrouding the views in a soft, white layer. While the mist added a mysterious charm, it also obscured the stunning vistas that Riverston is famous for, leaving us with just a glimpse of the beauty hidden beyond.
The highlight of the day was the climb up Manigala Mountain, a feat that tested our endurance and teamwork. We navigated the rugged terrain, pausing for a brief session led by the seniors on compass mapping, studying the local flora and fauna, and the historical significance of the nearby villages. These educational moments added depth to the hike, connecting us with the environment and the rich heritage of the area.
After successfully reaching the summit, we took some time to enjoy the beautiful view while having a small snack. We then began our descent down the mountain using an alternate route, which was longer than the one we had climbed.
At the end of the hike, we enjoyed a well-deserved lunch. The day continued with a refreshing bath in a nearby river, followed by evening tea—a perfect way to unwind after the hike. We departed the site around 5:30 pm, our spirits high from a day well spent.
This hike was more than just an adventure; it was a revival of the scouting spirit and a day of learning, strengthening brotherhood, and the renewal of a tradition that will undoubtedly continue for years to come.
Special thanks to our Master-in-Charge, Mr. Saman Rathnayake, for his invaluable support throughout the entire process.
