The Trinity College Wildlife Society, in collaboration with the Youth Exploration Society (Y.E.S.) of Sri Lanka, Kandy, hosted ‘Slither & Sense II’ on 6 February. This awareness programme, focused on the conservation of snake species, was held at the Napier Multi-Purpose Learning Arena.
The event was attended by students from Kingswood College and Hillwood College, alongside Trinitians, who gained valuable insights into the handling and care of these reptiles. Guest speakers from Y.E.S., Mr Sachintha Wedagedara and Mr Niwahal Vimukthi, shared knowledge based on their field experiences while supporting young members in presenting their own research. The session provided an opportunity for both Trinitians and visiting students to explore the diverse world of Sri Lankan snakes.
Slither & Sense II was an expanded version of the previous year’s event, featuring practical sessions with live snakes. The committee members organised an engaging afternoon, with Middle School students actively participating in the presentations. Participants learned about distinctive snake features, behaviours, and habitats.
A key focus of the session was addressing misconceptions and misinformation that often lead to the unnecessary destruction of these creatures. A highlight for many was the opportunity to observe snake features up close under professional supervision.
To conclude the session, the Wildlife Society set up an information centre where participants could further explore the species featured. Attendees also received a complimentary bookmark and refreshments.
Slither & Sense II aimed to educate students on the importance of snakes and reflected the Wildlife Society’s unique commitment to spreading awareness both within and outside the school. Protection and conservation of the wild remain core values of the Trinity College Wildlife Society.
The President, committee, and members, along with the Teacher-in-Charge, are grateful for the continuous support and guidance provided by the Principal, Vice Principal, Co-Vice Principal and the Director of the Trinity College Co-curricular Enrichment Initiative, Mr Wasana Dissanayake.
