August 2024 was a month filled with outstanding sports achievements for Trinity College! From the football fields to the basketball courts, our teams displayed exceptional talent, determination, and sportsmanship. Here’s a look at what we accomplished:
Football Achievements
Our football teams delivered impressive performances across multiple tournaments:
- Under-20 Football: Trinity College finished 4th in the Provincial Tournaments, organized by the Department of Education Central Province. The team won their first match 3-0 against Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College, with goals from Viduka Dhammage, Viduneth Dhammage, and Umar Hasan. Despite a challenging semi-final, they played with determination, though narrowly missing out on a higher placement.
- Under-18 Football: The Under-18 team became champions in the Provincial Tournaments, showcasing their skill with a 4-0 victory in their opening match against Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College. The final against Dharmaraja College was a close contest, ending with a 2-1 win, thanks to crucial goals by Amher and F.M. Yousuf.
- Under-16 Football: The Under-16 team finished as runners-up in the Zonal Tournament and also emerged as group champions in the SLSFA U-16 Group Stage Matches. They won their matches against Sumangala College, Springfield, and Kingswood, demonstrating consistent effort and teamwork.
Basketball Success
Our basketball teams also enjoyed a successful month:
- Under-20 Basketball: The Under-20 team won the Central Province championship, defeating Colombo International School Kandy 47-24 in the semi-finals. The final against Gateway College Kandy was affected by rain, but Trinity secured a 24-2 lead in the first quarter, resulting in a well-deserved win.
- Under-17 Basketball: The Under-17 team took the Central Province championship title as well. They won all their matches, including a close final against Kingswood College Kandy, which ended 64-61 in our favour.
- Under-15 Basketball: Competing in the All-Island Basketball Tournament, the Under-15 team advanced to the quarter-finals as group champions. Despite an early loss to Azar College, they recovered with strong wins against Carey College and Rahula College Matara.
Cadet Band Recognition
The Trinity College Cadet Band excelled at the Western Cadet Band Selection Camp held at Rantabe from August 10th to 14th. The band earned top honours in the 2nd Battalion, secured 2nd place in the Provincial category, and finished 5th overall. The significant improvement in their performance was supported by the college’s investment in new musical instruments.
Swimming Championships
The Trinity Swimmers made waves at the National School Games Central Province Meet, held on the 5th and 6th of August at the Digana Sports Complex Swimming Pool:
- Overall Champions: Trinity College Kandy was crowned the overall champions, with a total of 847 points, surpassing Dharmaraja College Kandy, who finished as runners-up with 539 points.
- U12 Boys Champion: Wishwadinuth Pradeepan took the top spot in the Under-12 boys’ category.
- U14 Boys Champions: Sithupa Ninduwara and Chehan Goonethilake dominated the Under-14 boys’ category.
- U16 Boys Champion: Imesh Dissanayake emerged as the Under-16 boys’ champion.
- U20 Boys Champions: Jayawanth Vishuwadesh and Shenal Ranhaluge claimed the title in the Under-20 boys’ category.
Cricket Efforts
Our cricket teams faced some tough competition:
- Under-17 A Team: The Under-17 team reached the Quarter Finals against St. Peter’s College Colombo. Despite a strong bowling performance, with Sethmika Senevirathne, Dinal Fernando, and Kanilka Anthony taking key wickets, the team was unable to chase down the target and lost by 116 runs.
- Under-15 B Team: The Under-15 B team faced a challenging match against Sumangala College Wariyapola in the Division 2 Quarter Finals. Although they played hard, the team was outscored, bringing their campaign to an end.
Rugby Matches
Our rugby teams participated in several hard-fought matches:
- Under-12 to Under-16 and 1st XV: The Under-12 to Under-16 teams and the 1st XV played matches against Dharmaraja College, St. Peter’s College Colombo, and Royal College Colombo. The 1st XV secured a solid 40-14 victory against Dharmaraja College, though they faced close defeats in their other matches.
Gymnastics Achievement
The Trinity College Gymnasts maintained their strong performance, finishing as runners-up at the Central Province Gymnastics Meet. With a total of 52 points, this marks the second consecutive year that Trinity has earned this position.
Athletics Achievements
At the recent Provincial Athletics Meet, the Trinity Athletes achieved remarkable success:
- Under-14: Champions
- Under-16: Champions
- Under-18: Champions
- U.G.K. Uyanwatte was recognized as the Best Athlete of the Meet in the 400m event.
We also achieved the title of 1st Runners-up in the Relay Championship. Trinity won the Overall Championship with a total of 226 points.
These achievements in August 2024 are a true reflection of our commitment to the “Spirit of Lions Sports Paradigm.” We extend our sincere thanks to the Director of Sports, MICs, coaches, and all Trinitians for their contributions.
