Music with Meaning: Perceiving Literature Through Music

By Sathira Marahela (Web Content Team)

The Library Council of Trinity College Kandy recently organized a unique event that explored music from a literary perspective under the theme of friendship. This event, held at the school premises, featured four distinct segments conducted in English, Sinhala, Tamil, and Japanese.

The English session was led by Mr. Lasantha Thennekoon the choir master of Trinity College Kandy, offering an insightful analysis on the lyrical depth of selected songs. The Sinhala session, which was the longest and most engaging as well as entertaining, was conducted by Mr. Samitha Dunukepotha, Deputy Director of the Chief Secretariat of the Central Provincial Council. As the Chief Guest, Mr. Dunukepotha captivated the audience with his in-depth interpretations and dynamic styles of presentation. He was joined by Mrs. Nimesha Wimalasena, further enriching the discussion. To add a musical touch, three students from the school’s Oriental Music Society performed timeless Sinhala songs with themes on literature, enhancing the effective delivery of the literary analysis .

The Tamil session was conducted by Mrs. Shermiladevi, who provided a comprehensive review of Tamil songs, highlighting their poetic essence and emotional depth. The Japanese session, led by Mrs. Rathnakumari and Mrs. Ridmi Weerasinghe, was particularly special as the teachers graced the occasion in traditional kimonos, offering an authentic cultural experience. Their session delved into the nuances of Japanese friendship-themed songs, providing a unique cross-cultural perspective and revealing a glimpse into foreign views of literature

This event successfully merged music and literature, fostering a deeper appreciation of Literature through music, while celebrating the universal theme of friendship. It was a memorable experience that left both students and teachers inspired.
