“Mastering Money: Trinity’s Financial Literacy Initiative”

Reviewed by Thivaharan Humrushan (Library Council)

Trinity College Kandy’s Library Council organised an enlightening “Smart Spending” workshop on October 28, 2024, in the College Auditorium. This workshop aimed to enhance the financial literacy of students from Grades 9 to 14, providing them with valuable insights and practical advice. The workshop’s emphasis on financial literacy aligns with current educational trends, preparing students to become financially savvy individuals who can contribute positively to society.

The workshop commenced with a prayer, setting the tone for a productive and educational session. Mr. Rukshan Galanga, Finance Manager of Trinity College Kandy, served as the guest speaker and introduced the fundamentals of spending. His informative presentation delved into the pillars of spending and outlined investment strategies for students and adults, emphasising the importance of maximising returns.

An interactive Q&A session at the workshop’s conclusion allowed students and teachers to clarify their doubts and engage in discussions on financial matters and economising spending. The Library Council gratefully presented Mr. Galanga with a token of appreciation,

acknowledging his dedication and effort in educating young financial minds.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Rukshan Galanga for sharing his knowledge and expertise. Additionally, we express our appreciation to the Librarian Mrs. Achala Illangakoon for her guidance and support throughout the workshop. Mr. Wasana Dissanayake’s unwavering support was instrumental in the workshop’s success. We also acknowledge the valuable contributions of the Curators and the Library Council members who made this workshop a resounding success.

In conclusion, the “Smart Spending” workshop equipped students with the skills and knowledge empowering students to navigate the financial landscape with confidence and responsibility. The Trinity College Library Council continues to serve as a beacon for nurturing creativity and knowledge amongst Trinity’s young minds.

A Comment from one of the participants

“I would like to share my thoughts regarding the programme held on 28/10/2024 The Topic was “smart spending which is relevant for the current world. I was inspired by participating in this programme conducted by Mr Galanga.
He explained the smart ways of investing our money in the financial market. Participants were so interested in that, and the discussion was held fruitfully. Especially young Trinitians had come up with their questions and were involved with the programme enthusiastically.”

It was genuinely exciting to see the enthusiasm of the young Trinitians throughout the 3D Design & Printing Workshop at the AI & Robotics Laboratory. 💯

From Grade 5 students upwards, the lab was filled with creativity, CAD modelling on Autodesk Fusion 360, digital prototyping, 3D scanning, and live industrial-grade 3D printing in action. Watching students transform their own digital designs into real-world objects was an incredible experience.

And this is just the beginning… many more technology and innovation workshops are yet to come!
