Trinity College, Kandy has taken a bold step forward in educational innovation with the launch of a Teacher Professional Development initiative in Artificial Intelligence through the Centre for Excellence (CFE), the College’s unit dedicated to career guidance and higher education. The initiative reflects the College’s continued commitment to equipping its educators with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to a rapidly evolving, technology-driven world.
As the first group of participants in this initiative, thirteen teachers from the academic staff who expressed interest have been sponsored to follow a Certificate Course in Artificial Intelligence offered by the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT). The programme provides a foundation in the principles of Artificial Intelligence while introducing practical applications relevant to education.
The course content will support teachers in guiding students to make effective use of the College’s recently established AI and STEM Laboratory. The laboratory provides students with opportunities to explore emerging technologies through hands-on learning.
The training will also strengthen the delivery of AI and Electronics courses introduced to students in 2025, which are now continuing into their second year at the College.
The initiative has been made possible through the leadership of Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundra OSB, Principal of Trinity College, whose encouragement of innovation in teaching continues to guide the academic direction of the College. The College also acknowledges the generous support of Mr Ahmed Didi, whose contribution has helped make this programme possible. Appreciation is also extended to the Vice Principal, Co-Vice Principal, and Finance Manager for their continued guidance and administrative support in implementing this initiative.
The Role of the Centre for Excellence
The Centre for Excellence (CFE) continues to support the academic community at Trinity College by guiding students towards meaningful higher education and career pathways while also encouraging the professional development of teachers.
This initiative reflects CFE’s broader objective of creating opportunities for both students and teachers to engage with emerging technologies and evolving fields of study.
As the first group of teachers begins this course, the College looks forward to the ways in which this professional development experience may enrich classroom teaching and further strengthen STEM education at Trinity College.
