From Tanks to Trails: Cycling Across Sacred Waters and Starlit Backroads

The Trinity College Cycling Club took on one of its most challenging journeys yet, a three-day expedition across the plains of Anuradhapura. Trading the familiar roads of Kandy for ancient reservoir embankments, intense midday heat and star-lit backroads, the riders were tested at every turn. What began as a long-distance ride quickly became an adventure filled with scenic views, memorable moments and a strong sense of team spirit.

Day 1: The Descent into the North Central Plains

The expedition got off to an early start from Kandy, with the team and all their gear loaded into the support van and lorry. Arriving at Rajanganaya Tank around 9.00 a.m., the riders unloaded their bikes, carried out quick safety checks and officially set off. The morning ride took them along scenic stretches towards Anuradhapura, leading to the massive embankments of Tissa Tank. After putting in the miles under the hot sun, a break for a light lunch and cold orange juice provided a welcome chance to recharge.

From there, the group continued towards Basawakkulama Tank. The North Central heat was intense, so a swim in the nearby anicut provided some much-needed relief. The cold water was a welcome reward after spending hours cycling in the heat.

After completing the day’s ride, the cyclists returned to their accommodation to freshen up and cook dinner together. It was a simple, satisfying meal after a long day in the sun. Before turning in for the night, the team visited the sacred grounds of Ruwanweliseya and Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, taking in the peaceful atmosphere and spiritual significance of the ancient city to round off the first day.

Day 2: The Ultimate Test of Endurance

The second day began with the team setting out early to make the most of the cooler morning air. Leaving base early, the riders first traced the vast embankments of Nuwara Wewa, their tyres humming against the road as the sun slowly rose over the water. From there, they pedalled onwards towards the ancient monastic complex of Vessagiriya. Nestled among massive rock formations and quiet cave shelters, the site provided a peaceful setting for a quick, well-earned breakfast. The club unpacked their homemade mushroom-and-bread meals before exploring the ruins.

By early afternoon, the expedition set off once more, pushing across the flat plains towards Mihintale. As the midday sun began to beat down, the physical toll of continuous cycling became more noticeable. Arriving near the ancient stupa of Katu Seya, the team pulled off the road and sought refuge beneath a canopy of thick trees. They stretched out on the ground for an extended rest, escaping the peak heat of the day.

Recharged by mid-afternoon, the riders clipped back into their pedals and headed towards Maha Kanadarawa Wewa. Reaching the wide reservoir, everyone jumped into the cool water, allowing the swim to soothe their tired muscles and provide relief from the heat.

As evening approached, the team prepared for what would become one of the most memorable parts of the trip. The return journey to Anuradhapura was made entirely in the dark, with bike lights cutting narrow beams through the night. The route brought an unexpected challenge when the team received word that wild elephants were active along the main stretch ahead. To avoid a potentially dangerous encounter, the group quickly altered its route, adding an extra 7 km to the journey around the area.

Navigating the quiet back roads in darkness required a tight formation, constant communication and trust in one another. Riding beneath a sky full of stars, the team eventually made its way back to base, tired but energised by the experience. It was a fitting end to a demanding day of cycling.

Day 3: Homeward Bound

The final day was dedicated to rest and recovery. The bikes were loaded back into the support vehicle for the long drive to Kandy, giving the riders time to reflect on the demanding expedition.

Beyond the scenic trails and ancient landmarks, the trip proved to be a test of endurance, teamwork and perseverance. From enduring the intense heat to dealing with unexpected mechanical setbacks, the team worked together to overcome each challenge and complete the journey successfully.

An excursion of this scale is never accomplished by the riders alone. Heartfelt gratitude goes to Mr Dulanjaya Abeywickrama, the Master in Charge, and Mr Chathura Subawickrama for their guidance and leadership, as well as to Mr Dammika Bambaradeniya, President of the Kandy Cycling Community, for his support and leadership.

The support crew also played an important role in the safety and smooth operation of the trip. The support van and lorry drivers navigated every stretch of the journey, helping to manage logistics and keep the equipment safe. The team medic provided attentive care throughout the expedition, helping the riders remain well during the heat and late-night detours.

The dedication of everyone involved helped make the cycling expedition a memorable experience for the team.
