Trinity College, Kandy seeks to have transparency as an integral part of its admission process and thus admissions to the School, are at the prerogative of the Principal of the School and the duly appointed Students Admission Committee, all of whom are appointed by a Board of Governors, whose composition is made up by Bishops of the Anglican Community, Leading Citizens, prominent Old Boys and other Representatives.

Applications are welcome from parents of children of school-going age. Both Boarding and Day Scholar places are offered, subject to availability and applicable requirements.

Vacancies are announced annually through print and online media. Applications must be submitted through the College’s official online admissions portal, and forms are made available only during the designated application period for each intake.

Intakes are conducted at the following levels:

  • Grade 1 – Applications are called in late February or early March of the preceding year.

  • Grades 4, 6 (occasionally 7) – Applications are called in July of the preceding year.

  • Grade 12 – Applications are called in April or May, following the release of GCE O/L results.

  • London Edexcel stream – Intake available at Grade 12.

The number of vacancies in each grade is fixed. All applications are reviewed, and shortlisted candidates may be required to attend assessments, tests, or interviews before final decisions are made.

While every effort is taken to ensure a fair and impartial process, admission cannot be guaranteed. Places are offered based on merit and availability, and the School reserves the right to decline an application without assigning reasons. Decisions are generally final; however, an appeal may be submitted for consideration.

Canvassing and unsolicited recommendations are strictly prohibited and may result in disqualification.

Grade 1 Admissions

Applications for Grade 1 are called in the year preceding admission. For example, applications for 2026 will be called in February or March 2025. Dates may be adjusted if necessary.

All applications must be submitted through the Trinity College Online Application System. The portal will be open only for a limited period following the official advertisement. Detailed instructions provided within the form must be carefully followed.

A non-refundable application fee is applicable. Payments must be made strictly through the prescribed process. Direct or ad hoc payments to School accounts will not be accepted.

Grade 1 admissions are offered in the Sinhala and Tamil Mediums only. Boarding facilities are not available at this level.

All completed applications submitted within the deadline will be reviewed. Based on the number of available places, a shortlist will be prepared. Currently, 168 places are available, and approximately 250 applicants will be shortlisted.

Priority is extended to Christian applicants and sons of Old Boys. Applicants who are siblings of current students or children of staff members may be shortlisted; however, this does not guarantee selection.

Shortlisted applicants will be notified and required to attend on scheduled dates with the child for whom admission is sought.

The selection process includes:

  • Child Assessment – Conducted at the Junior School, usually in April. The pre-school attended by the child is not considered. Teachers conducting the assessment should not be contacted.

  • File Review – Applicants will be advised on the required format and submission process. Except for photographs, all documents must be photocopies.

  • Interview – An interview with the Student Admissions Committee will be conducted, with both parents and the child present. Original documents may be requested. Interviews are typically held in May or June.

The results of the assessment, file review, and interview are evaluated collectively, and a final selection is made. The selected list is subject to approval by the Board of Governors.

Once approved:

  • Unsuccessful applicants will be informed via email. Appeals are not encouraged.

  • Selected applicants will be notified by post, along with fee details and registration dates.

  • A reserve list will be maintained and used if selected applicants do not confirm admission by the stipulated deadline.

The entire process is expected to conclude by late June.
