Reviewed by Chaniru Senhas (Web Content Team) The students of two Grade 5 classes had the privilege of visiting the Kandy General Post Office, where they were given the chance to explore the office and learn the basic procedures, from the 17th to the 20th of October 2023, as part of their academic activities. Embarking on this enlightening visit, students were presented with a unique opportunity to delve deep into the intricate workings of Sri Lanka’s Postal Service. They set out on a journey to not only gain knowledge but to truly immerse themselves in the world of postal operations. This experience allowed them to witness firsthand how dedicated postal workers skilfully navigate the complex web of postal deliveries. Moreover, the visit served as a window to a captivating realm of philately, providing students with invaluable insights into the fascinating universe of stamps. As they explored the postal service’s inner workings, they unravelled the significance of stamps, discovering the stories, history, and culture embedded in these tiny pieces of art. The provision of this enriching experience for grade 5 students was made possible because of the unwavering dedication of Mrs. Indira Bandara, the Teacher-in-Charge of the Junior School Stamp Club, and the support of Mr. Amila Perera (an Old Boy of TCK).
Dunumadalawa forest reserve is situated closer to the Kandy viewpoint. It was a great honour to go to a forest which was forbidden in the past. Field trips are a requirement for children to learn about nature, our endemic animals and plants. This visit further helped us to learn the history of Dunumadalawa and Kandy. Once I woke up on the 14th of September, I was overwhelmed with the excitement of visiting the Dunumadalawa Forest Reserve. At 6.00 am, I said “Goodbye” to my father after reaching school. Our team left for Dunumadalawa at 7.00am. A brief stop at the Kandy viewpoint helped us to absorb the marvelous view of the city. After a walk of about 1km, we reached the entrance of the forest. Our teacher led us to an extremely huge treehouse at the entrance. This place got crowded with the grade 5 classes of our college. Many boys came up and sang songs, told some stories, and delivered speeches. A forest officer came and shared some valuable information about this historical place. He explained to us the meaning of “Dunumadalawa”. In the past, soldiers from the king’s army went to the Dunumadalawa forest. The word ‘madalawa’ means ‘large place’. The trees from this forest were used to make bows and arrows which make the word “Dunu”, He continued, “In the merciless reign of the British, there was a time where the water level of Kandy City was decreasing. Many people suffered without water and some even died. A British man named Walker made the Dunumadalawa Lake which would supply water to Kandy. It was created between 1875 – 1876 with a depth of 50 feet and length of 145 feet.” He told us there are countless numbers of green vipers, 7 leopards and 3 cubs in the forest. He said, “We found the details by fixing cameras at different places”. I was petrified. After he shared the information, he said that littering in the forest was strictly prohibited. Then we had our breakfast and began our thrilling journey. We were first given a leech repellent. As we started walking, it started to rain. We put on our raincoats and our guide broke a branch following a tradition and entered the forest. I was overwhelmed seeing a steep hill. It was hard to go down the hill, I slid and hit Thenuka in the back. While we were walking, I was almost lost, but I caught up with the others. We trekked through the forest and reached the Dunumadalawa Lake. It was big as he had told us. Our guide said that it can carry 65000 gallons and we crossed the bridge and went to the other side of the forest. The grass was very high, and we were scared whether there were green vipers hiding among the tall grass. We journeyed further and crossed an area near a waterfall. Some boys had seen a leopard behind the waterfall, but I didn’t see one. Once we resumed walking after a water break, I saw a crowd of boys straying from the group. I shouted to the others asking to go right and I too went right and caught up with the others. Those who went in the wrong direction came about 10 minutes later. Teacher kept them in front so they will not get lost again. We climbed another hill and took a break and journeyed to a treehouse. I climbed to the treehouse which was totally terrifying. Climbing down was the hardest part I have ever experienced. Next, we journeyed to Roseneath Ela. Here, we had chicken fried rice for lunch. For our dessert of Watalappan, we queued up with our empty lunch boxes. Then it started to rain. We put on our raincoats and went to the other side where we lined up to go to the bus. As children, we learned that we have a common responsibility to protect our endemic animals, plants, our natural forests and jungles and all other geographical places. This was an epic journey I was proud to experience. Thank you, my dear teachers and the administration of Trinity College, for providing us with such a wonderful experience. With the current eating habits of children aged 14-16 which include excessive fast food and unhealthy sweet treats and the mostly sedentary life cycle which consist of watching television, playing computer games etc. Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now prone to be infected to the children under 14, 15 and 16 years of age. Reviewed by Nimuthu Pathiraja On the 2nd of October, the students of Trinity College were treated to a musical extravaganza by their teachers. Followed by meaningful themes, aimed at making the children aware of how they can make the world a better place to live in, the teachers entertained the students to a toe tapping, four-hour, lively performance. This was particularly a busy day for the whole school, with everyone involved in celebratory activities, filled with exciting and noteworthy events. The aim of the teachers was to make this Children’s Day unforgettable yet purposeful. They entertained students from grades 1 to 13 with mesmerizing songs under the emotive theme ‘The land belongs to you.’ In this regard, the major objective was to provide songs that we can learn from, songs that promote peace and harmony. They were not only pleasant and educational, but fun, as evidenced by the thunderous applause that followed each entrance. It’s also worth mentioning that the teachers added variety by having multilingual songs further, reinforcing the objectives promoting peace and harmony. After spending hours of consistent practice throughout the weekend and during all their free time, the teachers delivered. The students were captivated. This performance was truly an example of the unconditional care teachers have for us and how we will always be indebted to them. However, the celebrations were far from over, with students returning to classes having successfully organized talent shows, class parties, and games within their happy space: the classroom. Before too long, the much-anticipated inter-class Tap Rugby tournament organised by the School Officers’ Guild kicked off. The tournament proved to be thrilling, intense, and competitive, with a significant participation and well organised matches. Throughout all this action, the Culinary Club offered tasty delicacies in the quadrangle premises, and it’s undeniable that everyone, from students to teachers, enjoyed their delectable preparations. Undoubtedly, Children’s Day is a pivotal event of the year. The new initiative to make this year’s Children’s Day was undeniably a resounding success, both educational and enjoyable. The happiness experienced by students was unprecedented, and therefore, we would like to thank The Principal, Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, The Vice Principal, Mr. Krishanthan Antonydas, The teachers, The School Officers Guild, the Culinary Club, Support Staff, and the PROMWEB team for their guidance.

The much anticipated rugby encounter between Trinity College Kandy and Zahira College Colombo, which was scheduled for the 29th July 2023, did not happen due to a number of players from the Trinity team falling sick at the last moment, causing much disappointment to the Trinity and Zahira Colleges along with the sports loving community of Sri Lanka and above all, the players who had prepared for months to display their skill and mettle as sportsmen. Reluctantly, the Principal of Trinity College had no option, but to pursue this course of action considering the overall wellbeing of the students (players) who had fallen sick. Principal of Zahira College too did not have any option but to play due to the rules governed by the tournament. However, considering the longstanding cordial relationship between the two institutions and the anticipation of the players from both schools, we are in the process of exploring options to organize a separate rugby encounter with the two schools in the near future. This in turn will enable the players from both schools to display a good game of rugby in the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship. We are resolved that with this latest move, the relationship enjoyed between the two institutions for nearly 100 years will further improve and become stronger. It is our sincere wish and prayer that this mutuality and collaboration would set an example to school sports in SriLanka. Mr. Trizvii Marikkar – Principal – Zahira College, ColomboRev. Fr. Remembering him on his 83rd birth anniversary, 27th July 2023. Denzil Lakshman Kobbekaduwa was born in the city of Kandy in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) on the 27th of July 1940. It is appropriate at this moment of time to write a few words about this legend on his 83rd Birth Anniversary. He was a legendary sportsman, a great military officer who was able to command the respect of all Sri Lankans, and a person with humane qualities loved and respected by his followers locally and internationally. Denzil had his nursery education at Hillwood College Kandy and followed his primary and secondary education at Trinity College Kandy. During his tenure at Trinity College, it was clearly identified that he was a personality with great leadership qualities with the ability to focus on his classroom activities and skillfully apply himself in the field of sports. The school authorities recognised his capabilities and first appointed him as a school officer of the Lemuel House which he represented. Due to his commitment and the respect he commanded Denzil was appointed as a School Prefect and later as the Senior Prefect of Trinity College Kandy. In his classroom work, he successfully completed the GCE (O/L) Examination and subsequently completed the H.S.C. Examination and qualified to gain admission to the University of Peradeniya to continue with his Tertiary education. However, Denzil being a Sportsman and an outdoor personality opted to join the Sri Lanka Army (then Ceylon Army). Denzil was a person who contributed immensely in the field of sports when he was a senior studentat Trinity College. First, he represented the Lemuel House at Rugby Football, Hockey and Cricket. During this period, he went on to represent the Trinity College 1st XV Rugby Team, 1st XI Hockey Team and 1st XI Cricket Team. He also Captained the 1st XV Rugby Football team in 1959 and was awarded the Rugby Lion. He was also the Vice captain of the 1st XI Hockey Team and was awarded the Hockey Colours. General Denzil Kobbekaduwa s contribution to the Sri Lankan society as a Sportsman and a Military Officer has been enormous. Over the last 3 plus decades many people have written articles related to his Military activities and the leadership, he gave in the battle front. However, it is appropriate to write a few words about his contribution in the Sri Lankan Sports arena specifically in the field of Rugby Football. At the initial stage as an Officer of the Sri Lanka Army he along with his fellow officers initiated a program to develop Rugby Football within the Army and he himself played for the Army Sports Club in the Clifford Cup tournament conducted by the Ceylon Rugby Football Union. (S.L.R.F.U.) He went on to Captain the Army Rugby XV and later on coached the Sri Lanka Army team. He also played for the Defense Services Rugby XV in tournaments conducted by the S.L.R.F. U. Denzil also played Rugby for Kandy Sports Club and went on to Captain the club team in 1969. This year Kandy Sports Club ended the season as theRunner up at the Clifford Cup tournament conducted by the S.L.R.F. U. He also played for Upcountry Rugby Football team and was the captain of the team as well. His final objective was to play for Sri Lanka which he successfully accomplished. Having played Rugby at Club level and at national level he retired from playing the game but took up to coaching Rugby Teams. He was able to coach the Trinity College Kandy 1st XV team. (His Alma Mater) for four years 1967 to 1970 and Army Sports Club team for several years. Having done Rugby coaching assignments, he took up to the administration of the game. He was appointed as the Secretary of the S.L.R.U. in 1973 / 74. This was the year Asia Cup Rugby Tournament was held in Sri Lanka. Japan won the tournament while Sri Lanka ended up as the Runner up. He also took up to assignments of Rugby Refereeing and was nominated as an A grade referee of the Sri Lanka Rugby Referees Society. Denzil was appointed as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Rugby Referees Society and was nominated as a Referee of the Asian Rugby Referees Society. He was also the Sri Lankan Rugby Referee / Manager of the Sri Lankan Rugby team on many overseas tours of the Sri Lanka Rugby team during that era. Neutral Referees was the call of the day to officiate Schools Rugby Football games. However due to his impartial refereeing he was the first Trinitian to officiate a Bradby Shield game, Royal College Vs Trinity College. And from Royal it was Jagath Fernando who blew the whistle. Denzil was also a sitting member of the Duncan White Sports Foundation which supported Athletics. This legends contribution to the sporting arena was all voluntary services and no remuneration was received by him. On the 14th of January 2023 at an awards ceremony conducted by the S.L.R.F.U. a special award was presented by the Rugby stalwarts of Sri Lanka to honour the services rendered by Denzil for Sri Lanka Rugby. The award was presented by Ajith Abeyratne on behalf of the S.L.R.F.U,. another distinguish Rugby personality and was received by Mrs. Lali Kobbekaduwa.. Now I will present a short review regarding his career with the Sri Lanka Army. After leaving Trinity College in 1960 Denzil joined the Sri Lanka Army (Ceylon Army) as an Officer Cadet and had his initial training at the Military Academy in Diyathalawa. After successfully completing the training Denzil moved to United Kingdom for Military Training with the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst UK. Having successfully completed the 2-year Military Training Course at Sandhurst he returned to Sri Lanka and joined the Armored Crops Regiment as a young officer. He being a capable officer had an excellent career with the Sri Lanka Army starting as a Lieutenant and rose to a Major General over a period of time. During this
