The inaugural Eco Club and biennial Handwork Exhibition was hosted by creative thinkers of the Kindergarten section on the 1st of August. The Kindergarten “Singithi” Scouts commenced the event by presenting a guard of honour to the chief guest, Mrs. Merlinda Wijeratne. Afterwards, a Grade 1 student welcomed her with a bouquet. The opening prayer was led by the Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Shelton Samadanam.
The Grade 1 students then presented a souvenir to the special invitees: Chief Guest, Mrs Merlinda Wijeratne, the Principal, Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, the Co-Vice Principal, Mr. Ananda Marasinghe, the Junior School Headmistress, Mrs. C.P.K. De Tissera and the past teachers. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the oil lamp. Next, a pair of Grade 2 students delivered a welcome speech and provided an introduction to handwork.
The projects, created by Kindergarten students, showcased at the exhibition, were crafted using waste materials or natural resources. These creations stand as evidence of their creativity, and knowledge on environmental sustainability.
The Eco Club, an initiative of 2023, aiming to promote environmental awareness and protection among young Trinitians, was introduced to the audience by Grade 2 students. The club, which consists of twenty-eight first-graders and fifty-six second-graders, carried out a number of projects, including tree nurturing, observing birds, and organizing an awareness campaign for World Environment Day. This year, the students started their activities by bringing a fruit plant from home to the school farm, where they intend to plant 25 species of fruit trees.
Using natural, recyclable, and repurposed materials, the students’ creations were on show in the exhibition, underscoring their responsibility as “The Keepers of the Earth.” The Kindergarten students sang an exquisite tune to conclude the event. Ultimately, the show was formally inaugurated by the Chief Guest with a ribbon cutting, allowing people to appreciate the imaginative and environmentally conscious exhibits created by these young gentlemen of TCK.
The exhibition was a remarkable success thanks to the tremendous support and guidance given by the Junior School Headmistress, Mrs. C. P. K. De Tissera, the Grade Heads, Miss W. R. De Silva, Mrs. H. J. Mulleriyawa and Miss H. D. D. V. Alwis. Furthermore, the supervision of Mrs. R. M. R. S. K. Munasinghe and Ms B. H. M. D. R. Bulathsinhala encouraged students to work to their full capacity.
