On September 10, 2024, Trinity College Kandy successfully organized a conference on the importance of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and its vital role in promoting health and well-being. The event brought together a group of renowned experts and environmentalists to discuss the central theme of improving indoor air, its effects, and associated challenges.
We were privileged to host Dr. Deng Wenjing and Prof. Keith Ho from The Education University of Hong Kong, along with Prof. Warshi Dandeniya from the University of Peradeniya. Their insightful presentations emphasized the significance of better indoor climate control and how it directly affects comfort and long-term health. They shared their valuable insights on how worsening air pollution is impacting indoor air quality and urged both students and teachers to take proactive steps in mitigating these effects.
The experts also addressed Sri Lanka’s unique environmental conditions and their impact on IAQ from a local perspective. Students participated in air quality tests using specialized equipment. These hands-on sessions allowed students to measure pollutants such as carbon dioxide, particulate matter, and humidity in various areas of the school. This practical experience gave students a real-world understanding of indoor air quality and the technology used to monitor and improve it.
According to the data collected Trinity College Kandy enjoys optimal air quality, ranking among the best in Kandy schools. As Trinitians, we can be proud that the air we breathe is both safe and pure.
The Environmental Pioneer Brigade and Young Innovators and Researchers Club (YIRC) worked hard to make this event a resounding success. These organizations play a significant role in creating awareness of environmental issues, including air quality, among students from grades 6 to 13. Contributing to the success of the program are Ms. Nimesha Wimalasena, Ms. Rasika Herath, and Mr. Wasana Dissanayake, whose leadership and dedication made the project a success. Special thanks go to Prof. Warshi Dandeniya, who played a significant role in connecting Trinity College with international experts. Participants gained a deep understanding of the important role of indoor air in ensuring a healthy future for all. We hope to have more informative sessions that broaden our perspective on the environment.
