On 6th August, the Social Service Union of Trinity College, Kandy, in collaboration with Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy (MGCK), organised a welfare programme during the annual Esala Perahera. The initiative took place near the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, where thousands of devotees had gathered to witness the sacred procession. Many arrive in the afternoon and remain along the route well into the night, braving the elements to witness this deeply significant cultural and religious event.
In response, students from both schools worked together to offer practical support. Buns and cordial drinks were distributed to devotees, while basic medical items such as Panadol and Vicks balm were shared with those experiencing minor ailments caused by extended outdoor exposure.
Sixteen Trinitians took part in the programme, representing the Social Service Union’s commitment to thoughtful, community-minded action. Their quiet dedication and teamwork ensured that the project was carried out with care and consideration.
The Union extends its thanks to Mrs Dharshani Abayakoon, Teacher-in-Charge, for her ongoing guidance and encouragement. Appreciation is also due to Ms Gayathri Ramachandran for accompanying the students, and to Mr Wasana Dissanayake for facilitating transportation. Special recognition goes to the student committees of both schools for their effort in planning and coordination.
This initiative reflects the values that Trinity College seeks to instil in its students — humility in action, leadership through service, and compassion for others. By supporting the devotees of the Esala Perahera, students demonstrated a quiet sense of responsibility and care, embodying the spirit of service that lies at the heart of a Trinity education. The Social Service Union looks forward to continuing similar projects that strengthen connections within the wider community.
