Trinity College Middle School Students Support Schools in Kuruduwaththa, Gampola Following the Ditwah Cyclone

In the aftermath of severe weather conditions caused by the recent Ditwah Cyclone, several schools in Kuruduwaththa, Gampola area were affected by flooding and landslides. Disruptions to daily life and education created an immediate need for support, particularly for students who had lost access to basic learning materials.

Responding to this situation, Middle School students and staff of Trinity College, Kandy undertook a social service initiative to assist affected school communities. The project extended support to eight schools: Giraulla Maha Vidyalaya, Thalihunna College, Pallapitiya College, Berawila College, Yatapana College, Uduwilla College, Gamunupura College, and Watekedeniya College.

Through the combined contributions of Grade 6–9 students and donors, a total of 535 stationery packs were collected for distribution. The students were actively involved at every stage of the initiative, including organising, packing, and assisting with distribution. Their efforts reflected a shared sense of responsibility and care for fellow students affected by the recent crisis.

The initiative was carried out at the request of Dr Muditha Edirisinghe, following urgent needs identified in the affected areas. The collected contributions were handed over to Dr Edirisinghe on Friday, 9 January, during a visit by a small group of Middle School and Upper School students, accompanied by their teachers.

Dr Edirisinghe expressed his appreciation for the support extended by the College during a difficult period following the Ditwah Cyclone. He noted that the stationery donations would be of considerable benefit to students whose schooling had been disrupted and acknowledged the timely assistance provided to the affected school communities.

The College is grateful for the opportunity to support these school communities during a time of recovery and to stand in solidarity with them as they work towards restoring normal school life. The College also extends its sincere thanks to all students, staff, and parents whose contributions and support made this initiative possible.

  • Trinity College, Kandy is pleased to congratulate Kenneth Hulugalla of the Batch of 2015 on being awarded the PhRMA Predoctoral Fellowship in Drug Delivery, a highly competitive international award recognising outstanding doctoral research in pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences!

The fellowship, awarded by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation, supports a small number of doctoral candidates each year whose work demonstrates strong potential to translate laboratory research into clinical practice.

Kenneth is currently pursuing his Doctor of Philosophy in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering at the @olemiss. His research focuses on improving the way cancer medications are delivered within the body, addressing a long-standing challenge in oncology, ensuring that treatment reaches tumour sites more effectively while minimising impact on healthy tissue.
