The Trinity College Astronomical Society successfully organised an engaging astronomy workshop, AstroneX ’26, for students in Grades 6 to 9 on 22 May 2026 within the College premises. The programme was designed to encourage students to explore the universe and inspire young Trinitians to develop an interest in space science and practical rocketry.
The programme featured two distinguished speakers. Professor Kapila Bandara Wijayaratne from the University of Peradeniya (UoP) attended as the Chief Guest. A respected academic in the fields of Astronomy and Physics, he inspired the students through an insightful presentation on the wonders of the universe.
In addition, Himaru Abeygunaratne, an accomplished old boy of the College, was invited to address the participants. Himaru achieved District First and Island Fifth in the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination. By sharing his experiences and academic journey, he encouraged and motivated the younger students.
The workshop included interactive sessions covering basic principles of astronomy, the solar system, stars, and space exploration. Participants actively engaged in discussions and practical activities throughout the programme.
One of the highlights of the day was the Water Rocket Construction and Launch activity. Under the guidance of Master Radin Edirisinghe and with the support of members of the Astronomical Society, participants had the opportunity to construct their own water rockets using everyday materials. The activity concluded with a rocket launch held at the College Quadrangle.
The workshop proved to be a successful initiative, contributing to the development of logical thinking, teamwork, and a greater interest in astronomy among the participants.
On behalf of the Astronomical Society, we extend our sincere gratitude to Prof. Kapila Bandara Wijayaratne, Himaru Abeygunaratne, Master Radin Edirisinghe, the dedicated teachers, and all the student volunteers who contributed to the success of this event.
