Reviewed by Thejaka Abeysekara & Thehas Dayaratne (Web Content Team) On June 27th, the Astronomical Society of Trinity College Kandy (ASTCK) hosted an indelible workshop that brought together students and experts for an exciting day of astronomy. Special guests from the Foundation of Astronomical Studies and Exploration (FASE) made the event remarkable. Commencing at 2:30 pm with students from grades 6-9, in the impressively packed Napier Hall, FASE kicked off the event with two fascinating lectures. The first was an introduction to astrophysics and general astronomy, that provided complex ideas about the universe. Rocket Launches After the initial lecture, there was a short break for refreshments. Students then participated in a thrilling water-rocket competition organized by FASE and ASTCK members. Divided into five groups, participants designed, built, and launched their own rockets. A standout moment was a demonstration by Master Branon Stephan from Grade 10, who impressed everyone with his skills. Exploring Telescopes and the Night Sky The final lecture focused on observational astronomy, specifically the anatomy and usage of telescopes. This session, delivered by FASE, was particularly valuable as it prepared students for the evening’s telescopic observation. Despite cloudy skies and the threat of rain, the perseverance of ASTCK and FASE members ensured that the students were able to observe a few constellations, making the best of the situation. The workshop wrapped up around 8:30 PM, with excitement still in the air. The clouds parted just enough to allow glimpses of the night sky, enabling students to put their new knowledge to use. Under the guidance of FASE and ASTCK members, participants marveled at the constellations, ending the day on a high note. The success of this workshop wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of several individuals. Special thanks go to Mr. Wasana Dissanayake, TCCEI, Mrs. Nalika Gunarathne (Teacher in charge of ASTCK), and the ASTCK student committee. Their dedication and hard work made the event a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended. This workshop wasn’t just an educational event; it was an inspiring journey into the cosmos, igniting a passion for astronomy and science in young students. The collaboration between ASTCK and FASE set a high standard for future events, promising even more exciting explorations of the universe.
Reviewed by Methul Dissanayake and Thusath Dissanayake The fourth rendition of Neo Kosmo organized by the Foundation of Astronomical Studies and Exploration (FASE), who were at the forefront of the Sri Lankan astronomical scene, served to be the most combative and most anticipated quiz of the year. The competition that took place from 30th-31st December comprised of two stages, a selection round and the final scavenger hunt, which were both held online. The first round was a standard quiz paper divided into the five main subjects. The team had little difficulty in acing this one, as they proceeded on to the big stage. Contrary to prior quizzes, Neo Kosmo finals were a virtual scavenger hunt ,that integrated a comprehensive storyline which the contestants were constantly following, with interconnected tasks testing different areas of their knowledge. The crew of five were met with 8 such tasks based on basic astronomical trivia, coupled with complex equations, a touch of history and a display of the team’s presentation abilities. After a night of intense competition, the team had high hopes of a positive result the following day. Promising as expected, Team TCK emerged champions against the formidable Team of Nalanda College Colombo, by a 100 point margin. With this jubilant achievement, ended the collective quizzing days and an illustrious year for the society as a whole. Review by Thusath Dissanayake The Astronomical Society of TCK has been busy planning and scheduling their activities to engage team members in a positive yet nurturing framework. After a series of virtual quizzes in which both A&B teams of the Astronomical Society participated, they sailed to the final round, which was a happy achievement. The two teams voyaged to Colombo on the 16th to compete in the finals against the forerunners at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike College Colombo 7. The participants this year were: Team A Master Methul Dissanayake (Captain, Cosmology) Master Amoda Kossalawatte (Rocketry) Master Himaru Abeygunarathne (Astrophysics) Master M.S. Umar (Observational Astronomy) Master Thusath Dissanayake (General Astronomy) Team B Master Adhithya Herath (Captain, Cosmology) Master Hiranga Suraweera (Astrophysics) Master Disath Jayasinghe (Observational Astronomy) Master T.Humrushan (Rocketry) Master Chirath Jayasinghe (GeneraLAstronomy) After the concluding phase, anticipation mounted as each team awaited their positions. TCK made their alma mater proud with Team A receiving a 2nd Runner up position, while Team B, despite being the youngest team in the competition, clinched an impressive 6th place beating over 30 teams in the process. TCK acknowledges the highest ranking of Master Chirath Jayasinghe (Team B) and Master Thusath Dissanayake in the General Astronomy category within the finals and preliminary competitions respectively. Overall, the culmination of a massive, combined team effort garnered impressive results for the Astronomical Society’s quiz teams. A special mention of gratitude goes out to our generous sponsors Dr. Viduranga Waisundara and Dr. Himal Suraweera for assisting the teams.
