INVICTA ‘23: A Day of Innovation and Discovery

The Science Day of Trinity College, organized by the Science Society was held on the 10th of March 2023 after a lapse of 2 years. The much-anticipated event was the highlight of the Science Society Calendar. It was the moment for students to showcase their academic and practical knowledge in the field of science. This year’s Science Day celebration was organized under the theme ‘sustainability’, and the event focused on the contribution of science to saving our planet.

The chief guest was Prof. Pradeepa Bandaranayake of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya. The event was attended by representatives from 12 schools. Following the formalities, the Welcome speech was delivered by the President of the Science Society, Master Manuth Bandara, followed by the Principal’s speech where he emphasized the importance of Science to the future of humanity. Next was a presentation by a student inventor, Master Yehen Bandaranayake of grade 8 on a new eco-friendly method of producing paper. He demonstrated his prototypes and enlightened the audience on its potential uses.

Next was the Prof. Senaka Bibile Memorial Inter-School All Island Quiz Competition. The preliminary stage was held on the 24th of February via the Zoom platform. Seven teams competed for the two spots in the final that day. After a heated quiz session, Dharmaraja College, Kandy, and Kingswood College, Kandy emerged as the two finalists. The finals were held on the Science Day and was conducted by N.H. Udawatte, K.G.B Dayan Chathula and M. A. Athyab. The Dharmaraja team consisted of Lakdinu Abeywardhna, Pasindu Dissanayake, Nirmal Samarawickrama, and Rasika Gunasekara while the Kingswood team consisted of Achintha Ranathunge, Tehan Erdly, Akila Bandara and Induwara Ranaweera. After a fierce battle of wits, Dharmaraja College emerged victorious, scoring 82 to 78.

Following the quiz, Prof. Pradeepa Bandaranayake presented a keynote speech outlining the importance of nanotechnology and its application in manufacturing, healthcare, forensic science, etc. Her knowledge and expertise in the field are unparalleled and students gained a deeper understanding of the emerging nanotechnology through her lecture.

After the keynote presentation, student representatives from guest schools were invited to participate in the Practical Science activities organized by the TCSS. Students were divided into three groups and were taken to the biology, physics, and chemistry labs where they participated in the activities.

After the activities, students gathered once again in the main hall for the closing ceremony. Certificates were awarded to the teams that participated in the quiz competition and to the students of Trinity who had won the poster competition organized prior to the science day. The event ended with a vote of thanks by the secretary of the Science Society, Master Vinuth Warnasooriya.

The event marked the resurgence of the Trinity College Science Society after several science days were canceled in the previous years due to the Covid 19 pandemic. We hope this spirit lives on in the Science Society in the years to come.
