The annual report of the Model United Nations club, 2018

The Trinity College Model United Nations (TCMUN) Club continued to enhance its reputation both within school and at national level this year. The club continues its upward trajectory by attending more events, while taking a more prominent role among the Kandy Model United Nations clubs.

The year started with the election of a new committee. Lilendra Alawattegama was elected as President, Lukman Hassan and Gyan Dissanaike as Co-Secretaries, A.S. Lukman as Vice President, and D. Karegala as Treasurer.

This year Trinity College was able to host the second ever Hill Country Model United Nations Summit in July 2018. The event consisted of a one-day workshop, followed by a conference the following day. This event was attended by several Kandy Schools. During the conference, the Trinitian’s acquitted themselves with skill, and Master H.S. Lukman Hassan won a Higher Commendation in the UNHRC committee.

The TCMUN also attended the 11th session of Sri Lanka Model United Nations, held in September 2018, on the theme ‘Redefining Global Diplomacy’. This competition was an extremely good opportunity to learn debating and diplomacy – skills vital for the development of future leader – as well as to interact with other students of many different backgrounds, forming important interpersonal and inter-school connections. This year, the students also participated in the UNICEF forum on the topic of the causes, effects and prevention of child abuse, and took part in the “UNICEF challenge”, to spread awareness and propose solutions of this issue, through the eyes of children themselves.

In October 2018, the society attended Pioneers’ Expo organized by Model United Nations clubs of Vishaka College and D.S. Senanayake College. The students learned about such topics as the Sustainable Development Goals. The Trinitians focused particularly on the topics of “Quality Education”, “Sustainable Cities and Communities”, and “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions”.

The Trinity College Model United Nations Club would like to thank all its members for their effort and commitment during this year. We would also like to thank our Master-In-Charge Mr Raveendran, for all of his constant support and hard work. As we close of this year, it is our hope that the club will continue to develop and grow for many more years to come.
