Reviewed by Wosanda Malaviarachchi Under a golden sky at Bogambara Stadium, TCKs Rugger teams confronted their opponents, Sri Sumangala College – on the 30th of June 2024. They went head-to-head hoping to gain a win for their teams, especially the Trinitians since they had lost the previous match and this victory would bring them back on track to win the Bradby Shield and the Tournament. First Half The game kicked off on schedule at 4.15 pm and almost immediately a tri was scored by Usman Shafraz and then a few moments later another try by Murad Raizan of Trinity making the Opposition rethink their game plan and bringing the scoreboard up to 10 for Trinity and zero to Sumangala, after just 10 minutes of the game. The rest of the first half went as expected with the Trinitians pulling ahead with a considerable gap of 27 points and the Sumangala Players managing to Score 5 points, a few moments before the 1st half ended with 32 points for TCK and 05 points to SSCK. Second Half The game resumed at 5.15p.m with a few more quick tries by the Trinitians, followed by the Sumangalains who also scored some magnificent tries which brought them on par with TCK, but it made no significant difference since, by the end of the match, Trinity College had rocketed ahead leaving Sri Sumangala at a disadvantageous score. Finally, with a few moments on the clock, Team TCK scored one last try which guaranteed their victory. Trinitians who had racked up 49 points were unable to make it to 50. Nonetheless, they won the match with a gap of 35 points. Though the Sumangala team lost this match, they showed their impressive rugby skills that retrained Team TCK from getting farther than 49. Victory for Trinity The spectators were not disappointed and were able to witness a series of spectacular tries from both ends. We thank the Captain of the Trinity 1st XV rugby team Anuhas Kodituwakku, the Captain of The Sumangala 1st XV rugby team Dinidu Wickramasinghe and MICs for a spectacular encounter. This encounter was a prime example of teamwork of rugby players and inspired upcoming young players to carry the Trinity’s rugby legacy for years to come.

It is with deep regret and profound disappointment that we witnessed the incident that occurred after the recent rugby match on 30th June 2024 at the Airforce Grounds, Ratmalana, Colombo, involving the assault of match officials. This dastardly act is entirely unacceptable and stands in stark contrast to the values of respect, sportsmanship, and integrity that our schools and the sport of rugby strive to uphold. Whilst we condemn this act of gross violence and hooliganism, our thoughts are with the match officials who were subjected to this type of aggression. The committed services of the Sri Lanka Society for Rugby Football Referees [SLSRFR] are critical for their pivotal role in ensuring the safety and fairness of play, and the enjoyment of the game for all students and spectators. Hence, it is the duty of the sports loving community, and especially schools’ rugby community to extend the required support. We view this matter extremely seriously and strongly urge the statutory bodies of the game to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation and take maximum punitive and preventive measures to eradicate such violence from sports in Sri Lanka. It is critically important that the schools’ rugby community collectively condemn this act of violence and take all possible measures to provide a safe environment for students, parents, old boys and match officials upholding the true spirit and value of the sport. Reviewed by Thejaka Abeysekara & Thehas Dayaratne (Web Content Team) On June 27th, the Astronomical Society of Trinity College Kandy (ASTCK) hosted an indelible workshop that brought together students and experts for an exciting day of astronomy. Special guests from the Foundation of Astronomical Studies and Exploration (FASE) made the event remarkable. Commencing at 2:30 pm with students from grades 6-9, in the impressively packed Napier Hall, FASE kicked off the event with two fascinating lectures. The first was an introduction to astrophysics and general astronomy, that provided complex ideas about the universe. Rocket Launches After the initial lecture, there was a short break for refreshments. Students then participated in a thrilling water-rocket competition organized by FASE and ASTCK members. Divided into five groups, participants designed, built, and launched their own rockets. A standout moment was a demonstration by Master Branon Stephan from Grade 10, who impressed everyone with his skills. Exploring Telescopes and the Night Sky The final lecture focused on observational astronomy, specifically the anatomy and usage of telescopes. This session, delivered by FASE, was particularly valuable as it prepared students for the evening’s telescopic observation. Despite cloudy skies and the threat of rain, the perseverance of ASTCK and FASE members ensured that the students were able to observe a few constellations, making the best of the situation. The workshop wrapped up around 8:30 PM, with excitement still in the air. The clouds parted just enough to allow glimpses of the night sky, enabling students to put their new knowledge to use. Under the guidance of FASE and ASTCK members, participants marveled at the constellations, ending the day on a high note. The success of this workshop wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of several individuals. Special thanks go to Mr. Wasana Dissanayake, TCCEI, Mrs. Nalika Gunarathne (Teacher in charge of ASTCK), and the ASTCK student committee. Their dedication and hard work made the event a resounding success, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended. This workshop wasn’t just an educational event; it was an inspiring journey into the cosmos, igniting a passion for astronomy and science in young students. The collaboration between ASTCK and FASE set a high standard for future events, promising even more exciting explorations of the universe.

The event was a great success, featuring an array of engaging activities and a scenic hike, all aimed at fostering teamwork, communication, and physical fitness among the students. Students from both grades collaborated to untangle themselves from a human knot, fostering a sense of unity and teamwork. Balloon Caterpillar Race: In this lively activity, students worked in sync to move a balloon caterpillar from one point to another. The game promoted teamwork, coordination, and social skills, helping students develop better group dynamics. Lava Walk: The Lava Walk activity strengthened cohesion and teamwork. It improved communication skills and encouraged students to show care and responsibility for their teammates. This game also provided an opportunity for students to identify and enhance their leadership potential. Hike Around TELA Premises Post-games, students embarked on a hike around the beautiful TELA premises, reaping multiple benefits: Rugby Match After the hike, boys from both grades enjoyed a collective rugby match. This competitive sport promoted physical fitness, strategic thinking, and teamwork. Lunch and Entertainment Following the morning’s activities, students were treated to lunch. The event concluded with more fun activities, music, and games, ensuring a delightful and memorable day for everyone. The educational excursion to TELA was a professionally organised event that successfully promoted teamwork, communication, and physical fitness. It not only helped students build essential skills but also strengthened the bond between students and teachers. The combination of games, hiking, and sports activities provided a holistic experience for the students of grades 12 and 13 from TCKIQ, making the day both enjoyable and educational. By integrating key concepts such as team building, leadership development, communication skills, problem-solving, conflict resolution, adaptability, trust building, motivation, time management, stress management, creativity, decision-making, and self-awareness, the activities were designed to comprehensively enhance the students’ personal and interpersonal skills.

We are pleased to announce the successful restoration of the “Are Ye Able” mural, located in the Side Chapel of the Chapel of Trinity College Kandy. This extensive restoration was expertly executed by a dedicated team of restorers during the period of 2022 and 2023. The restoration process has yielded significant enhancements to the mural, reviving its colours and intricate details. The vibrancy and clarity of the scene have been meticulously restored, bringing new life to this treasured artwork. Below are before (2018) and after (2023) images that illustrate the remarkable transformation of the mural. Before Restoration (2018): After Restoration (2023): About the Mural Originally painted in 1928 by David Paynter, the mural reflects the lush, vegetative beauty of Sri Lanka that deeply impressed Paynter upon his return from studying art in Europe. The artwork depicts the mother of James and John kneeling before Jesus of Nazareth, who is adorned in a yellow robe. She petitions Jesus to grant her two sons, who stand on either side of him, the highest places in his kingdom. Instead, Jesus offers them the path of humility and the privilege of suffering, encapsulated in the profound question: “Are ye able to…” Below is a historical photograph of David Paynter in 1928, captured as he painted the “Are Ye Able” mural in the Side Chapel. The restoration of the “Are Ye Able” mural marks the initial phase of the comprehensive Chapel Restoration project currently in progress. We are committed to preserving and enhancing the historical and artistic heritage of our Chapel, and we look forward to sharing further updates as the restoration project advances.
