Reviewed by Rehan Anandakumar The Badminton teams of TCK have been striving to reach a noteworthy status since 2014. After clinching the championship in the B division and being placed runners-up in the A division in 2016, their perseverance to attain greater heights remained strong. From the 17th-21st April 2024, All Island under 17, Inter School Badminton Team Championships were held at St. Thomas College, Bandarawela and SLA Ratnayake Memorial Indoor Stadium. Firstly, the teams competed, with a few of the most competitive schools from all around the nation: St. Sebastian College Moratuwa, St. Anthony’s College Katugastota, Ananda College ‘B’ Team and Bandarawela Central. Trinity had its first match with St. Sebastian College Moratuwa where they won 1st double, 2nd double, and 3rd Single. During their second match with St. Anthonys College, they secured the 1st single,1st double, and 2nd double and then Trinity overpowered Ananda College B team and finally was the match with Bandarawela Central College where once again Trinity showcased its unmatched skills conquering this match as well. Performing exceptionally well, Trinity College Kandy moved into the Super semifinal ‘A division’ where after an intense match we unfortunately lost against Lyceum Wattala securing 3rd place in the Super ‘A’ Division at the All-Island Inter School Under 17 Badminton Team Championship. TCK’s badminton journey reaches a historical milestone with this groundbreaking achievement, being placed 3th out of 105 schools island-wide. We extend our gratitude to the Master-in-charge Mr.Shanaka Ariyarathne, Mr.Rashika Weerasooriya and the Coaches Lasantha Thilakawardana and Shamika Nugaliyaddha for their continued support.
The Junior National Badminton Championship 2022 (Kandy Zone) was held from 12th of December to 21st of December at the St. Anthony’s Indoor Stadium and Municipal Indoor Stadium, Kandy. More than 10 schools from the Kandy zone participated during this tournament. The results as follows: Under 13 – Boys Doubles Quarter Finalist: Abrar Akmal & Nethupa Premachandra Under 15 – Boys Singles Champion: Samiru Ranasinghe Runner up: Pawan Dissanayake Under 15 – Boys Doubles Champions: Samiru Ranasinghe and Pawan Dissanayake Under 17 – Boys Singles Champion: Thenula Rathnayaka Under 17 – Boys Doubles Thenula Rathnayaka played alongside a player from Dharmaraja College, Kandy and became runners up. Under 19 Mahen Wijesundara was selected for National Games without playing in this tournament due to his previous stellar performances. Currently he is ranked All Island number one. We are delighted to announce that all the players who participated in the tournament got selected for the Junior National All Island Championship. The College congratulates the team for showcasing impressive performances at the Junior National Championship 2022 and extends its gratitude to the coach Mr. Sankalpa Gunawardhana and Master-in-Charge Mr. Shanaka Ariyaratna and Mr. Rashika Weerasooriya for their continuous support and guidance.
We are delighted to note that Trinity Badminton Player Master Mahen Wijesundara has secured 3 victories at the recently concluded 69th National Badminton Championship held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium from 13th to 19th December 2021. The tournament was organized by the Sri Lanka Badminton Association. Mahen achieved the following: Under 19 Singles – 3rd Place (Semi Finalist) Under 19 doubles – 2nd place (Runners Up) Open Mens Doubles – Quarter Finalist Mahen’s Double partner was a Royalist and a member of the National Badminton Pool. We would also like to record that this is the first time in almost 2 decades of Trinity’s Badminton history, a Trinitian has become a Semi Finalist and a Runners Up at Under 19 Singles and Doubles. We congratulate Mahen for his achievements and wish him best for his future endeavors in Badminton.
Our congratulations to Kavishkar Rajendrakumar and Kanujan Kumarendran for placing 3rd at the 68th National Badminton Championship 2020. The tournament was held from 17th to 21st of February 2021 at the Mercantile Badminton court, Colombo 7 Kavishkar and Kanujan were also recognised as the Best U19 Double (all island) for the year 2020. We wish them best for their future matches and championships.
Our congratulations to Kavishkar Rajendrakumar and Mahen Wijesundara for achieving Provincial Colours for Badminton which were recently awarded for participating at the All Island National Games 2019. Only the best seven players get selected to represent each province at the All Island National Games. Kavishkar and Mahen bagged bronze medals in 2019. We wish them best for their future tournaments.
The U15, U17 and U19 Badminton players from Trinity participated at the ‘Pera Battlefield 2020’ and became overall champions at the tournament. The Trinity players were placed as follows: U19 Singles champion – Rajendrakumar Kavishkar Doubles champions – Rajendrakumar Kavishkar and Kumarendran Kanujan U17 Singles champion – Mahen Wijesundara U15 Single champion – Thenula Ratnayake Doubles champions – Thenula Ratnayake and Rusith Galagodawatta Open men’s singles champion – Mahen Wijesundara Open men’s singles 2nd place – Rajendrakumar Kavishkar Open men’s 3rd place – Akindu Edirisinghe Our congratulations to the players for their individual performances and overall achievement as a team. The Junior School Inter House Badminton tournament took place on the 30th of July 2019, with 5 houses competing in two categories: Singles Doubles And, with the Championship decided by the total number of wins in both the above categories. For the individual performances: Singles Champion D.S.H. Ranasinghe (Carter Blues) Doubles Champions P.G. Dissanayake (Boarding House) T.M. Ranaraja (Boarding House) Carter Reds were overall champions with 32 wins in the singles category and 18 in the doubles, giving them a winning total of 50.
