Reviwed by Ayyash AbuBakr The Karate Team of Trinity College Kandy ventured out to participate in a competition at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium on the 3rd and 4th February 2024. The young Karate kids of TCK stood out among several competitors doing justice to the training and practice they have had under their coach. The team participated in several events that gave them more experience and knowledge. Master P.R.J.S.G.Rajakaruna achieved greater heights with his exceptional performance in the under 18, 6,5,4 Kyu Kata event which earned him a place for an international expedition. In the same age category, Master Cheruka Rajakaruna was placed among the best 8 in the 6,5,4, Kyu Kata event. In addition, TCK’s Junior Karate masters were also highlighted at this competition. In the under-14 age category, While, Master N.V.N. Dias under the age 16 category, was among the 8 best Kumite With the help of the coach Mrs. Harshani Basnayake and TIC Mrs. Dasuni Gunaratne the Trinity College karate team has reached great heights and even more remembrance. Trinity College Kandy has reached new dimensions in her sporting sphere, receiving recognition for prowess in Karate.
Trinity Karate players participated at the All Island Karate Tournament held at the Bandaragama Indoor Courts on 22 December 2021. The following players were awarded medals: Hesitha Weerasekara (Gold Medal) Sudesh Jaysinghe (Gold Medal) Nadula Wathurakumbura (Silver Medal) Damith Pathirana (Bronze Medal) Mohammed Ishqullah (Bronze Medal) Shamika Abeysinghe (Bronze Medal) Our congratulations to the team for their achievement and we wish them best for their future engagements.
Karate as a sport has evolved to much greater heights at our College over the past few years, and the karate players have performed well at both local and international tournaments. This article is to highlight the achievements of the young karate players at Trinity College. Achievements Having 8 representatives in the Sri Lankan karate team, the boys have achieved quite a lot during the past years. 2019 alone showed Trinitians performing in all island and international levels at many tournaments. Master Nadeesh Illukkumbure was placed in an Asian Championship, placed third in All Island Championship, first in Senior National Championship, and also received a College Lion for his remarkable performance. This was the first time a Lion was awarded for karate. Further, he became the Provincial Champion and Best Player, and the Champion at the Senior Festival Provincial meet display event by defeating players from the Army, Navy and Air force. Nadeesh was also awarded the Ryde Gold Medal at the College Prize Giving. Master Hesitha Weerasekara and few junior Karate players were placed in the Mayor’s Cup in Malaysia, and he also won two bronze medals at the Senior National Championship. Individual performances [ninja_tables id=”12175″] Karate at Trinity started in 2014 and now we have around 30 boys involved in the sport. Practices are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The young and confident players hope to continue to bring local and international recognition to our College. However, these youngsters are in dire need of proper facilities and equipment in order to improve their work in the sport and efficient practices. Those who wish to contribute financially or through donations are most welcome to do so.

Two of our Karate players, Nadeesh Illukumbure and Osanda Bandara represented Sri Lanka participating at the Asian Karate Championship held in Sabah, Malaysia from 23rd to 30th April 2019. The 18th edition of this event was organised under the patronage of the Asian Karate Federation (AKF). Master Nadeesh Illukumbure was ranked 7th among the Asian players in the category U21 Kumite Male – 55kg.
