Sunglasses are more than just a fashion accessory. Sunglasses are a form of protective eyewear designed primarily to prevent bright sunlight and high-energy visible light from damaging or discomforting the eyes. They can sometimes also function as a visual aid, as variously termed spectacles or glasses exist, featuring lenses that are colored, polarized or darkened. In the early 20th century, they were also known as sun cheaters.
They also screen out 75% to 90% of visible light from the sun, which penetrates the Earth’s atmosphere and reaches your skin and eyes in the form of UVA and UVB rays.
Sunglasses are also important for kids as their eyes are still developing. Sun exposure from a young age can contribute to the development of eye disease later in life.
Since the 1930s, sunglasses have been a popular fashion accessory, especially on the beach.
