It is no secret that the threats we all face because of Climate change increase with every passing day. The Environment Pioneer Brigade has made spreading awareness about this issue, encouraging the community to act on its primary objective with the organisation of the annual Climate Week programme, coincinding with the World Environment Day. This year’s event unfolded between the 2nd to the 6th of June 2025.
The programme included two inspiring speeches at the Upper School assembly on the 2nd of June and at the Middle school assembly on the 4th of June. Presented by student speakers, the speeches aimed to motivate and encourage their peers to act alongside them.
Additionally, the cornerstone of the event was a special workshop on Solid waste management conducted by the JAICA project coordinator to the Kandy Municipal council Mr. Takahiro Ehara.
The workshop was very educational to the audience in attendance, as Mr. Ehara educated the importance of managing waste and the methods to do so – his session was admirably engaging and vibrant with several unique approaches to manage waste also being informed, such as a special sport invented which would award points based on waste collection. Furthermore, there were several team activities organised with regard to waste management that included the collection of garbage from several places within the college premises, separating the collection into different categories based on the nature of the garbage. This was described as “great fun” by the participants.
It is fair to state that the Climate week was a resounding success and a special note of gratitude should be extended to the College Management team, the Director of the Trinity College Co-Curricular Enrichment Initiative Mr. Wasana Dissanayake, the Teacher-in-charge of the Environment Pioneer Brigade, Mrs. Nimesha Wimalasena for their support in this unprecedented battle against climate change, Deforestation and rising sea levels caused by our actions and aggravated by our ignorance.
