The Sound of Theatre: A Threefold Masterpiece of Music, Story and Spirit

Written and Reviewed by Sathira C. Marahela

On the evening of Saturday, 25 October, the Main Hall of Trinity College, Kandy transformed into a theatrical arena as The Sound of Theatre unfolded before a full-house audience. The event brought together three distinct productions: EvitaSura Pura and Les Misérables.

Evita: Commanding the Stage with Grace and Power

The evening opened with Evita, drawing the audience into the world of Eva Perón with clarity and focus. From the moment Che stepped forward, the production carried a strong narrative thread that guided the audience through Eva’s rise.

Eva was portrayed with composure and emotional depth, and her rendition of Don’t Cry for Me Argentina stood out as one of the memorable moments of the night. Characters such as Juan Perón and Magaldi added further richness, shaped by weeks of preparation, vocal work and collaboration. Through thoughtful staging and a unified cast, Evita set a high standard for the productions that followed.

Sura Pura: Where Sinhala Drama Found New Life

The tone shifted with Sura Pura, an original Sinhala production that brought freshness and imagination to the evening. Its choreography, visual design and confident cast carried the story with purpose. Every movement felt deliberate and well practised, while the interplay between characters strengthened the momentum of the drama.

The chorus provided rhythm and cohesion as the narrative moved between humour, tension and emotion. With vivid staging and committed ensemble work, Sura Pura became a reminder of the students’ ability to create original theatre with conviction.

Les Misérables: A Blend of Revolution and Emotion

The night concluded with Les Misérables, a production that lifted the atmosphere to a new height. From the first notes, the hall shifted into a world of revolution, hope and human struggle.

The cast approached the musical with confidence and maturity, delivering harmonies that resonated and choreography that captured the urgency of the barricades. The portrayal of Marius Pontmercy became a particular highlight, balancing vulnerability with strength.

The ensemble moved with precision, and the transitions between large battle scenes and quieter emotional moments flowed smoothly. With expressive staging and powerful vocal delivery, Les Misérables became one of the defining features of Sounds of Theatre.

The success of the productions rested on the combined strength of the Drama Society, Western Music Society, Media Unit, Administration Staff, and the Support Staff. Their work ensured that every aspect of the event, from lighting and sound to logistics and publicity, stayed consistent and reliable.

The guidance of Mr Aslam Marikkar and Mr Kanishka Samarasundara shaped months of rehearsals into cohesive and disciplined performances. The results on stage reflected the students’ dedication, late evenings of practice and their shared aim of doing their best for College.
