Feats of Young Karatekas of TCK

The inaugural Trinity–Thomian Karate Encounter 2025 was held on 1st November 2025 at the S. Thomas’ Sports Complex, Mount Lavinia, marking a significant milestone in the sporting calendar of both schools. The encounter served as a spirited display of skill, discipline, and sportsmanship.

Competitions were held in Kata (Open Age Category) and Kumite (Under 14, Under 16, and Under 18). Each category showcased the determination and talent of the young karatekas, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for the sport among school students.

Representing Trinity College were:

Master Chamath Sinhalage (Captain), Master Vinuth Dias (Vice-Captain), Master Thinal Abeykoon, Master Shevan Ahas, Master Vihanga Ranasinghe, Master Aritha Thilakarathne, Master Lokitha Alahakoon, Master Tharul Edirisinghe, Master Hasandu Edirisinghe, Master Jiunath Makavita, Master Navitha Denipitiya, Master Damsara Jayarathne, Master Sethika Mayadunne, Master Nisal Wijethunga, Master Shewin Ahas, Master Damithu Bandara, Master Manith Kahapola, and Master Dilrukshan Sureshkumar.

The TCK team was coached by Sensei Harshani Basnayake, guided by the Teacher-in-Charge Mrs Dasuni Gunarathne, whose support and mentorship were instrumental in preparing the students for the encounter.

The young Trinity Karatekas delivered an exceptional performance throughout the event, demonstrating precision, discipline, and unity. Their efforts were rewarded as they proudly claimed the Overall Kata Shield, a fitting reward for their dedication and perseverance.

The encounter not only highlighted the growing standard of school-level karate but also strengthened the camaraderie between the two colleges — paving the way for a new tradition of friendship and mutual respect.

  • Trinity College, Kandy is pleased to congratulate Kenneth Hulugalla of the Batch of 2015 on being awarded the PhRMA Predoctoral Fellowship in Drug Delivery, a highly competitive international award recognising outstanding doctoral research in pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences!

The fellowship, awarded by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation, supports a small number of doctoral candidates each year whose work demonstrates strong potential to translate laboratory research into clinical practice.

Kenneth is currently pursuing his Doctor of Philosophy in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering at the @olemiss. His research focuses on improving the way cancer medications are delivered within the body, addressing a long-standing challenge in oncology, ensuring that treatment reaches tumour sites more effectively while minimising impact on healthy tissue.
