The Culinary and Hospitality Club of Trinity College proudly celebrates the achievement of Master Roshin Karthik, who secured All-Island 3rd Place in the Precision Bed Making category at the All-Island Tourism Day Competition, held at Waters Edge Resort. Organised by the Sustainable Tourism Unit of the University of Colombo, the event brought together students from across the island to showcase their skills in hospitality and tourism.
Trinity was represented by four members of the Culinary and Hospitality Club — Master Roshin Karthik, Master Harikesh Prabhager, Master Sanula Chandrasekare, and Master Sajana Halangoda — who qualified for the national finals after excelling at the Provincial Competition held on 12th September at SLITHM Kandy. Their journey to the national stage reflected their hard work and enthusiasm, along with the guidance and encouragement given through the Club’s training sessions.
In preparation for the finals, the team took part in two training programmes. On 28th September, they trained at Hotel Grand Kandyan, under the guidance of Mr Kanishka Perera (Manager of Housekeeping), who coached them on bed-making techniques, and Mr Indika Ekanayake (Executive Chef) and Chef Mahinda (Chef de Partie), who introduced new ways of preparing traditional Sri Lankan dishes.
Their second session took place on 29th September at Hotel Cinnamon Grand, Colombo, supported by Mr Indika Gonawala (Director of Operations – Shangri-La Colombo), Mr Nazoomi Azhar (General Manager – Cinnamon Grand Colombo), and Mr Nipun Thilakarathne (Front Office Manager, Ramada by Wyndham Colombo and MBA student at the University of Colombo). This training helped the students improve their practical knowledge and creativity. They also learnt from Mr Kapila Jayasinghe (Executive Chef), Mr Sanjeewa Wijesena (Executive Sous Chef), Mr Sudesh Ilukwaththa (Assistant Executive Housekeeper), and Mr Sanjeewa Suranga (F&B Captain). They were accompanied by Ms Shania Williams (L&D Intern), whose help and coordination contributed to the success of the session.
The national finals, held on 1st October, tested participants on several hospitality skills within strict time limits. In the Precision Bed Making category, Master Roshin impressed the judges with his technique and attention to detail, completing his task within 10 minutes to earn a well-deserved All-Island 3rd Place.
Reflecting on his experience, Master Roshin said:
“I’m truly honoured to have represented the club and to be recognised at such a competitive platform. This achievement motivates me to keep learning, growing, and making our school proud. I also had the opportunity to visit the Lotus Tower and Shangri-La Hotel as part of the competition. It was very interesting to see the daily work of a hotel, from housekeeping to front office operations. Watching how teamwork and care for detail play such an important part inspired me to aim higher and appreciate the effort behind good hospitality.”
The success of Master Roshin, Master Harikesh, Master Sanula, and Master Sajana shows what teamwork and dedication can achieve. The Culinary and Hospitality Club continues to encourage its members to develop practical skills and a professional attitude that will serve them well in the future. With Tourism and Hospitality emerging as one of Sri Lanka’s fastest-growing fields, Trinity College ensures its students gain early exposure to the industry through hands-on experiences and meaningful learning opportunities. Such initiatives help nurture confident, capable young Trinitians who are ready to contribute to the nation’s service and hospitality sectors with integrity and skill.
