The Horticulture Society wanted draw the attention of students, staff and visitors to their surroundings and thought it would be interesting for them to be able to recognise the trees found around the College premises.
The members of the society started their research with the guidance of the teachers in charge and selected nine of significant trees, consisting of seven species, at various locations in the school, such as the College Hall, Gaster Block and the Quadrangle.
Despite the curtailment of their project due to the Covid pandemic in late March, the members were able to re-commence and complete the labelling trees as soon as the College reopened. The names of the trees were hand drawn by Mr Cyril Wickramasinghe on aluminium boards.
The Society ensured that no trees were damaged when the labels were put up. The members stated that they hope to continue their research and label other plants at College and find out more about their history: when they were planted, and by whom, etc.
The teachers in charge Mrs Y. Hitinayake and Mrs N. Chandrasiri, the President Master Thusara Gallage, and the members of the Horticulture Society offer their gratitude to the Vice Principal for approving the project and the support staff for the assistance given.
