Trinity College CrossFit Program: A Journey Towards Fitness and Wellness

By Chaniru Senhas (Web Content Team)

With the launching of the CrossFit Program at the Asgiriya International Cricket Stadium in April 2023, Trinity College Kandy was drawn into an innovative experience with its students towards better physical fitness, aimed at combating the rising state of non-communicable diseases and thus the decreasing physical fitness. It has worked perfectly, having over a year of continuous training sessions, to become one of the key pillars of the health and wellness strategy at the college.

So far, the CrossFit Program has advanced significantly in enhancing the fitness standard of its students. It has morning sessions from 6 am to 7 am for students to develop greater endurance, strength, and agility. It is a mixture of weight training, ground exercises, gym workouts, and field activities, thus providing a comprehensive approach to fitness.

Mr. Bandula Pushpakumara, the Master-in-Charge of this program, a trained athlete and professional physical educator, is the great individual under whom students now get advanced and effective training. Mr. Pushpakumara has a Diploma in Exercise Science from the University of Peradeniya and has won many national and international competitions in athletics. He has touched all aspects in making this program successful. His personalized approach has taught students to wear the discipline of active living which significantly reduces the risk of diabetes and obesity.

A unique and commendable aspect of the CrossFit Program is its diversity. It is a great opportunity for students who have been unable to pursue sports at college to maintain their fitness and experience organized exercise. For them, the program has opened doors that will lead towards personal empowerment. For students who do actively take part in sports, however, it has been of utmost helpfulness. The cardio and weight training offered in the program have proven to increase overall fitness, durability, and strength level and have allowed for them to improve performance in their respective sports.

Reflecting on its achievements, the CrossFit Program has announced plans to host events in the field of fitness and develop further throughout this new year. Spearheaded by the leadership of the President, Mast. Nilanga Meegahakumbura and the Vice-President, Mast. Avishka Wanigasekara, the forward progress of this initiative is guaranteed as a promising future awaits.

The CrossFit Program of Trinity College has not only enhanced physical fitness among its participants but has also brought about a culture of health and wellness within the college community. Contributing towards dealing with sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits generally seen among young adolescents, it is now developing individuals who are socially, mentally, and physically well-rounded.

This initiative welcomes all students in Grade 9, 10, and 11, to take a step into the journey towards a better and more active lifestyle. Whether you are aiming to improve your athletic performance or simply to improve your physique, the CrossFit Program provides the best opportunity to maximise your potential during your college life.
