Under the golden morning sky on the 17th of January, 2025, the Trinity College Chapel once more, became the bastion of spirituality as students, staff members and college officials gathered to commemorate the 153rd anniversary of the College, which began with the Founders’ Day Thanksgiving Service. The service, which commenced at 7.30 am, brought the Trinity family to solemn worshipping and thanksgiving in honour of the visionary spirit of the Rev. Ireland Jones, the founder of this historic school, and many others involved.
The ringing of the Chapel bell from the John McLeod Campbell tower signalled the beginning of the service. The college choir, filling up the sacred space with the powerful strains of the hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty,” was soon followed into the Chapel by the dignitaries including the Principal, Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, the Vice-Principal, Mr. Krishanthan Anthonydas, the Co-Vice Principal, Mr. Ananda Marasinghe, and the Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Shelton Samadanam; after which came a prayer of invocation led by the College Chaplain, thereby establishing a mood of reverence and gratitude for the occasion.
In the course of the service, the Principal, Rev.. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, preached a motivating homily. Mr. Ananda Marasinghe, the Co-Vice Principal, rendered quite a touching remembrance address about the crucial role played by the old educators and leaders of Trinity.
The service concluded with the majestic hymn “O God Our Help in Ages Past,” a powerful reminder of God’s enduring grace and providence throughout Trinity’s 153 years of excellence. As the clergy recessed solemnly toward the west door, the congregation reflected on the enduring faith, dedication, and vision that have guided the College through generations.
This year’s Founders’ Day service was more than a celebration—it was a tribute to the countless men and women who have dedicated their lives to nurturing the spiritual, academic, and moral foundations of Trinity College. It was also a moment to look forward, with faith and determination, to the continued flourishing of the College in the years to come.
