“To enter a theatre for a performance is to be inducted into a magical space, to be ushered into the sacred arena of the imagination.”
The words of esteemed British writer Charles Dickens perfectly encapsulate the essence of the Inter-House Drama Competition held at Trinity College’s Main Hall on the 21st and 23rd of June 2023. Bringing to life two of Dickens’ greatest novels, the students of Middle School and Upper School showcased their astonishing talents in the realm of theater, encompassing acting, scriptwriting, prop making, and more. The dedication and preparation displayed by the students from both sections were truly admirable, evident in the weeks leading up to the competition as the college main hall buzzed with eager actors ready to showcase their skills in this friendly rivalry.
On the 21st of May 2023, the Middle School competition unfolded, featuring the immensely talented students portraying “Oliver Twist” – a gripping tale of a young orphan’s journey through adversity to his ultimate destiny. This captivating display of acting prowess was graced by the presence of three distinguished judges: Dr. Vihanga Perera, Mr. Disal Kapuge, and Ms. Fazmina Imamudeen.
Spanning three hours from 3pm onwards on both days, the event enthralled the audience with intense and enjoyable performances, leaving indelible memories in the minds of actors and spectators alike.
At the end of the day, the Middle School houses achieved the following rankings:
- 1st Place – Saunders House
- 2nd Place – Gibson House
- 3rd Place – Pilcher House
- 4th Place – Squelary House and Sahayam House (Tied)
The Best Actor award went to Abhises Wimalarathne who played Oliver from Saunders House, while Rose Maylie from Gibson House and Master Muhammed Jameel were honored as the Best Actors in Female role.
The Upper School competition gained further significance with the presence of the principal, Father Araliya Jayasundara OSB, alongside the esteemed panel of judges. “Great Expectations,” another timeless Dickens novel, came to life on stage, revolving around an orphan named Pip who unexpectedly inherits a vast fortune.
The eagerly anticipated and meticulously rehearsed Upper School competition extended until approximately 7:30pm, etching unforgettable memories in the hearts of all involved.
The senior houses achieved the following rankings:
- 1st Place – Central Boarding House
- 2nd Place – Garret House
- 3rd Place – Lemuel House
- 4th Place – Simithraracchy House
- 5th Place – Oorloof House
Nethula Hettihewage from Simithraracchy House was bestowed with the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Jaggers, while Master Dulith Cooray from Lemuel House was honored as the Best Actor in Female role.
Special appreciation must be extended to the Trinity College Literary Association and the school administration for facilitating this exceptional event. The guidance provided by the teachers, along with the incredible talents of the students, made this competition an unforgettable experience for all.
