Knowing how to repair and maintain your bike is a must-have skill for every young Trinitian, especially when reflecting on the fun memories of the ride. “Reparo Equito” was a workshop organised by the Cycling Club of Trinity College Kandy to teach young cyclists the fundamentals of repairing and maintaining a bicycle.
The workshop was held after school at the Automotive Society Workshop on the 8th of July 2025. It aimed to educate the participants on how to maintain and repair their own bikes and to highlight the benefits of acquiring this skill. The workshop was led by Mr Subash Dhanasekara and was attended by keen middle schoolers and upper schoolers who were enthusiastic to learn something new.
The session began with an introduction to the basic parts of a bicycle that every cyclist should know and then progressed to teaching how to correctly and safely use the bicycle. Afterwards, Mr Subash Dhanasekara moved on to the fundamentals of bicycle maintenance. He explained how important good maintenance is, using personal experiences to help students better understand the concept. Spare parts were passed around, making this a very hands-on workshop, and students were encouraged to ask questions freely to clarify any doubts they had.
“Proper maintenance can make your ride safer as well as long-lasting” was a key idea shared to inspire regular upkeep. Bicycles consist of key components that should be maintained after each ride, and Mr Subash explained this clearly to the students and members of the Cycling Club.
A word of advice to all cyclists was that while small repairs can be done at home, serious repairs should be carried out by a professional. The event ended successfully, with all students leaving with a greater passion for cycling and the realisation that maintenance is not just for bicycles, but for everything in life.
This workshop, organised by the Cycling Club of Trinity College, was filled with useful and practical knowledge for cycling enthusiasts. It also motivated cyclists to take part in future events, now that they know how to maintain and repair their own bicycles. Without a doubt, Reparo Equito will be remembered as a meaningful and empowering experience by all who attended.
