Beyond Boundaries: Trinity College’s Historic Leap in Diplomacy

Reviewed by Nimuthu Pathiraja and Shaluka Herath (Web Content Team)

After years of commitment to diplomacy, Trinity College Kandy reached a milestone that highlighted the power of statesmanship and unity. This achievement was part of a larger effort to foster meaningful dialogue and establish Trinity College as a reputed institution in the Model United Nations’ community. On November 2nd and 3rd, 2024, the college grounds came alive as delegates from across the country gathered to campaign for positive change—choosing discussion over confrontation and exploring solutions to today’s pressing issues, such as climate change and poverty.

The first gavel stroke kicked off on Saturday morning, at the inaugural TCMUN 2024 conference. The event was more than simply a typical UN simulation; it stood as a step toward inclusivity. For years, Model United Nations events were mostly limited to Colombo, thus this convention outside Colombo, was a big accomplishment.

The ambition behind this event was embodied in the TCMUN 2024 motto, “Audere est facere”—“To dare is to do.” This motto resonated with the spirit of all MUN delegates, emphasising that grit and resilience transform mere thoughts into impactful actions.

The event was attended by distinguished guests, including the chief guest, Mr. Sampath Senannayake, a respected Trinity alumni who is currently serving as a National Agribusiness Specialist at the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, and Mr. Rayhan Malik, the former Secretary General of SLMUN 2023 who is now a Junior Consultant at the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation. The conference featured approximately 150 enthusiastic delegates from across the nation and featured the following committees:

committees:

  1. General Assembly 4
  1. Security Council
  1. Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile
  1. United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
  1. African Union

The two-day event was made possible through the tireless efforts and dedication of the executive committee, which included:

  • Secretary General – Mast. Sanchitha Wickrama
  • Deputy Secretary General – Mast. Shaluka Herath
  • Head of Administration – Mast. Toshan Madugalle
  • Head of Registrations – Mast. Udantha Jayasinghe
  • Under Secretary General of Conference Protocol – Mast. Lakindu Perera
  • Under Secretary General of Public Relations and Media – Mast. Nethula Hettihewage
  • Under Secretary General of Logistics  – Mast. Matheesha De Silva
  • Under Secretary General of Finance  – Mast. Evin Kodithuwakkuaracchi

Several Trinity College representatives performed exceptionally well and were recognized for their contributions towards their respective committees:

  • Master S. Krishiv Ekaash – Honorary Mention (FIA)
  • Master Yumeth Epa – Honorary Mention (SC)
  • Master M.H. Hamzah – Honorary Mention (GA 4)
  • Master Kumath Epa – Honorary Mention (UNODC)
  • Master Nimuthu Pathiraja – Best Delegate (SC)

A few familiar faces returned, this time with the gavel in hand instead of the placard, chairing in 3 of the 5 committees. We recognize their contributions for the success of the conference,

  • Master Sadesh Rajapakse – President (FIA)
  • Master Thevan Ratnatilake – Vice President (FIA)
  • Master Gesith Epa – President (GA4)
  • Lukman Shafi – President (SC)

This event was undoubtedly a resounding success. Special recognition is due to the dignitaries who attended, the committee chairs for their valuable contributions,

and the College Executive Council, College

Management team, the Director of the TCCEI Mr. Wasana Dissanayake and Mr. Raveendran, the Master-in-Charge of TCMUN and Charge D’Affaires of TCMUN 2024, for their outstanding leadership. The efforts of PROMWEB and all contributors were greatly appreciated.

Moreover, a special note of appreciation goes out to all the past members and committees of TCMUN, for igniting the passion of diplomacy in the hills, for creating a legacy that we all can be proud of. This conference is a culmination of not only the committee of 2024 but also all past committees of Vinidu, Parinda, Dhisal, Gesith, Sadesh, Lilendra, Bilal and Malaka. Cheers to many more years of upholding statesmanship at the MUN.

We extend our best wishes to Trinity College Model United Nations to continue their activities with grace and perseverance.

  • More than a century ago, Rev. Lewis John Gaster envisioned a Chapel unlike any other. Working alongside him were Henry Schaetti, the distinguished Swiss architect whose early design work helped shape the project, and C. L. Unamboowe, the talented young Trinitian who transformed that vision into detailed architectural blueprints through remarkable skill, patience, and precision.

Today, the Chapel stands as one of Trinity’s most iconic landmarks. Yet behind its soaring pillars and intricate carvings lies a fascinating story of vision, creativity, and craftsmanship.

Discover how Rev. L. J. Gaster, Henry Schaetti, and Clement Leo Unamboowe helped create a building that has inspired generations of Trinitians for over a century.
