Wings through the Lens ’26: Young Trinitians Capture Birdlife Through Photo and Video

Reviewed by S. Dilukshan

The ‘Wings through the Lens’ Inter-house Bird Photography and Videography Competition, organised by the Trinity College Ornithology Club, was held on 14 February 2026, marking the third consecutive year of this student initiative. The event brought together participants from Junior School, Middle School and Upper School Houses, offering an opportunity to combine creativity, technical skill and an appreciation of birdlife in a practical setting.

The day began in front of the Trinity College Main Hall, where students gathered to confirm attendance and prepare their equipment. After a short word of prayer led by the Teacher-in-Charge, the group proceeded to the first field site at TELA and began their observations.

In the soft morning light, participants photographed peacocks and water birds across varied natural habitats. To meet the competition criteria and locate suitable subjects, they walked considerable distances, demonstrating patience, keen observation and determination. All competitors were dressed in black to maintain uniformity and minimise disturbance to the surrounding birdlife.

While the Senior Houses explored one habitat in search of diverse species and behaviours, the Junior Houses were guided to another designated area, ensuring both safety and productive engagement. Each group experienced the excitement of discovery in its own setting, transforming the session into a blend of field study, ethical wildlife observation and artistic expression.

Throughout the morning, competitors showed enthusiasm and focus. Participants from both Junior and Senior Houses worked patiently to capture birds in motion, at rest, and tending to their young, reflecting growing technical confidence and attentive observation. Later, the group moved towards the river area to photograph a wider variety of species.

Although unexpected rainfall briefly interrupted the programme, the students remained positive. The pause became an opportunity for discussion, group photographs and interaction with mentors.

Participants then proceeded to Lake Round View and resumed their work despite light rain. The changing weather conditions added another challenge, requiring adaptability and quick decision-making. After completing the field component, the group returned to College to submit their photographic and video entries.

The submission process, coordinated by the organising committee, was systematic and efficient. Entries were categorised by Junior and Senior Houses, and all procedures were completed smoothly.

This year’s event highlighted several key outcomes:

  • Participation across all Houses, with students demonstrating creativity, patience and teamwork, with nearly 50 students taking part in total.
  • Real-world learning about bird behaviour, habitats and the challenges of wildlife photography.
  • The development of ethical practices, ensuring minimal disturbance to birds and their environment.
  • The strengthening of 21st-century skills, including collaboration, leadership, adaptability and visual storytelling.

The competition served as both a platform for creative expression and an educational experience that strengthened students’ appreciation of birds and the natural environment. As entries were submitted, anticipation built for the judges’ decision, with participants reflecting on the lessons gained throughout the day; judging will take approximately two weeks, after which the final results will be announced.

The organising committee of Wings through the Lens ’26 extends its sincere gratitude to the Director of TCCEI, Mr Wasna Dissanayake, the Vice Principal, and the Principal for their guidance and encouragement. Appreciation is also extended to the Premises Manager for facilitating logistical arrangements and ensuring smooth coordination.

Special thanks are due to the staff of TELA for their cooperation and support in providing a conducive environment for field observation.

Wings through the Lens 2026 stood as a meaningful celebration of learning, creativity and environmental awareness. Beyond competition, the experience nurtured respect for birdlife, strengthened teamwork and encouraged students to observe nature with patience and responsibility.

The initiative will continue to develop in the coming years, offering broader opportunities and deeper learning experiences. Year by year, it grows in strength and quality, reflecting the dedication of the organisers and the enthusiasm of young nature lovers. The memories, skills and values gained through this event will guide future generations of photographers and ornithology enthusiasts, reminding them that discovery begins with curiosity and careful observation of the natural world.
