Shaken, Stirred and Steamed: An Evening of Mixology and Barista Arts

Reviewed by Kanish Krishnapradeep (Member of the Culinary and Hospitality Club)

The Culinary and Hospitality Club of Trinity College, Kandy had the privilege of hosting a hotel management workshop featuring a barista and mixology demonstration conducted by Times Academy on 13 August.

The evening began with a presentation on hospitality management, exploring key aspects of the hotel industry and its various sectors. This provided students with valuable insights into the ever-evolving field of hospitality and a clearer understanding of how hotels operate. The speaker also highlighted the challenges and high-pressure environments professionals often face, helping students appreciate the resilience and skill the industry demands.

A particular focus was given to the Food and Beverage (F&B) sector, where students learnt about the crucial role of kitchens in ensuring guest satisfaction. A highlight of this session was a hands-on lesson in dining etiquette and cutlery use. Through both explanation and demonstration, students were taught how to clean, handle, and arrange cutlery, strengthening their understanding of professional table etiquette.

The most anticipated part of the programme soon followed: the barista and mixology demonstration. Under the guidance of award-winning culinary students and instructors, participants observed an engaging mocktail-making session. Popular drinks such as the Piña Colada and Virgin Mojito were prepared step by step. Students were then encouraged to experiment with ingredients including coconut milk, ginger beer, Sprite, beetroot, and green chilli. Their creativity led to a unique beetroot-infused ginger beer mojito topped with chilli, a memorable example of innovation in beverage crafting.

The evening concluded with a coffee-making session. Students were introduced to different varieties of coffee beans, brewing techniques, and popular coffee drinks. They also had the opportunity to operate a professional coffee machine, making Americanos and lattes, which they later enjoyed together.

Times Academy, affiliated with Azteca University, is a certified hospitality and tourism management institution offering internationally recognised pathways for aspiring professionals. The Culinary and Hospitality Club of Trinity College, Kandy extends its sincere thanks to Times Academy for this enriching experience and looks forward to continuing its culinary journey in the years ahead.
