Programme Overview:
Parents play a pivotal role in positively shaping a child’s sports experience or negatively influencing the outcome. Parents need to help their children discover the fun in the activities while learning the importance of basic sports fundamentals, how to demonstrate good sportsmanship, etc. However, as evident across many schools in Sri Lanka, with each senior-level team, your child comes to represent where the corresponding levels of intensity of competition and expectations are higher, which often invites unwanted levels of parental involvement. This could disrupt team dynamics as well as your child’s performance levels. Research shows that parents who are negatively involved in their child’s athletics can create stressful environments as well as decrease the child’s confidence and self-esteem. Positive involvement, however, can make a strong bond between the parent and child and increase confidence and self-esteem.
Hence parents getting too involved in any school’s sporting affairs could only mean they want to pursue their selfish pursuits on behalf of their offspring. Such incidents are plenty and could prove detrimental to a school’s reputation. I strongly believe the right values are instilled at home and the school can only facilitate and direct them towards positive outcomes. Realistic expectations need to be set by parents of their children, and they must understand each of these strengths and limitations. Failing to do so, they become overly critical, judgmental, or impose unrealistic pressures. Not only is this unfair to your child too, but too often it ends up ruining a positive youth sports experience as it can undermine self-esteem, curtail enthusiasm, or the desire to participate. Parents need to understand that a child’s school sporting career is a stepping stone for something far greater where the lessons learned and values cultivated will provide the foundation to achieving greatness beyond the school gates.
This program will attempt to instill those navigational tools necessary for participants to act as support groups for their children so that their child discovers their optimum level in any sport of their choice. The role of sports in shaping a child’s character, instilling progressive values, setting realistic expectations, overcoming limiting beliefs, handling disappointments and setbacks, clarity of decision-making, building assertiveness, and making the transition to the real world, etc., will be some of the areas this program will cover.
