On the 31st of May, the Culinary and Hospitality Club of Trinity College, Kandy, had the privilege of hosting a Gas Safety Awareness Program conducted by Litro Gas Lanka Ltd. at Napier Hall. The session was an invaluable opportunity for students to gain vital knowledge on a topic often taken for granted—gas safety. With gas being a staple in almost every household, knowing how to use it responsibly is not just useful, but essential.
The program began with an insightful presentation, during which students were guided through the basic principles of gas safety, real-world precautions, and common causes of gas-related accidents. The presentation helped students truly understand the importance of awareness and responsibility when handling gas appliances, both at home and in professional kitchens.
One of the most impactful segments of the session was the practical demonstration on fire safety, where students were trained to use a fire extinguisher using the internationally recognised PASS method—Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. Fire extinguishers are often seen in public and institutional spaces, yet few are confident in how to use them. Thanks to this session, each student had the chance to put theory into practice by extinguishing a controlled fire under the supervision of professionals.
The session was conducted by Mr Nadun Heeraluarachchi, Mr Chaminda Wijekoon, Mr Milinda Herath, and the rest of the Litro team, who ensured the programme was interactive, educational, and engaging. Students were encouraged to ask questions.
This programme was not just helpful—it was eye-opening, equipping students with essential life skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
