Art in Tribute: Trinity Students Celebrate Rev. A. G. Fraser’s 152nd Birth Anniversary

Article by Thivaharan Humrushan (Web Content Team)

To mark the 152nd birth anniversary of Rev. Alexander Garden Fraser, one of Trinity’s most visionary Principals, the Student Archivists of the Trinity College Archives and Museum organised the Intra-School Rev. A. G. Fraser Portrait Art Competition 2025

Held on 10 October at the College Library premises, the event provided a meaningful platform for students to pay tribute to a leader whose ideals continue to shape the values and traditions of Trinity College, Kandy.

Rev. A. G. Fraser served as Principal from 1904 to 1924. He was a firm believer that education must develop character, intellect, and a commitment to service. His leadership laid the foundation for a culture of discipline, compassion, and excellence that remains central to Trinity’s identity.

This year’s competition invited students to reflect Rev. Fraser’s spirit through monochrome portraiture. Middle School participants were provided with a reference image of him in his youth, while Upper School students worked from a portrait from his later years. The monochrome format challenged participants to express emotion and depth through tone, contrast, and texture — qualities that mirrored Rev. Fraser’s quiet strength and humility.

They also express sincere thanks to Vice Principal Mr Krishanthan Antonydas for his continued guidance, to Mrs Thilini Sumanasekera, Curator of Archives, for her invaluable mentorship, and to Mrs Achala Illangakoon, College Librarian, for her coordination and support.

Special appreciation is extended to the Arts Faculty of Trinity College for their adjudication and expertise. The success of this initiative was made possible by the dedication of staff and students who shared in the spirit of this commemorative event.

Through initiatives such as this, the Trinity College Archives and Museum continues to honour the memory of Rev. A. G. Fraser, not merely as a historical figure, but as a lasting influence on generations of Trinitians.
