Message from the Chairman On behalf of the A&OC, I would like to thank the Trinity fraternity for their support and generosity towards the Trinity150 Project which has resulted in the successful completion of the first two projects under Trinity150, namely Alison House and the new Classroom Block. The Board and the A&OC have now decided to focus their attention on the restoration of Napier House and beatification of the surrounding area (including the quadrangle). The preliminary drawings / proposal for Napier & quadrangle (including the surrounding area) have been completed by the Architect / Consultants, under the guidance of the A&OC and Principal. The proposal and cost estimate has been approved by the A&OC and the Board. The Engineers Cost Estimate for the quadrangle renovation project is approximately 14mn. The tender process for both projects has commenced under the supervision of the Tender Evaluation Committee (comprising of senior members of College administration and the A&OC). Tenders for both renovation projects have been received and are under evaluation at the moment, with construction to commence in November 2021. We are delighted to state that the TCK Batch of 1991 has generously offered to donate a significant part of the expenses for the quadrangle project. We hope to convert the first floor of Napier in to a multipurpose area comprising classrooms / labs, meeting areas using temporary / movable partitions for flexibility in usage. The ground floor will be renovated to continue to function as the dining hall / kitchen. The renovation will also stabilise and preserve the building while introducing more light and ventilation where needed. We are hopeful that the work done will preserve the building until the more elaborate boarding house restoration project is undertaken in the future, depending on the success of the rejuvenation of the boarding house culture within the school. The Engineers cost estimate for the Napier House renovation project is approximately Rs. 21mn. We are hopeful that past Napierites and basketball players will rally round to support this worthy cause to make the Napier House and quadrangle renovation projects a success in time for the 150th year celebrations next year. A detailed proposal for the quadrangle renovation by the Project Architect, Ms Rangaji Jayasekara is attached for your information. The New Classroom block was commissioned as the ‘Abeyratne – Jeyaraj Building‘ at a soft opening held in the morning of 12 August 2021. The occasion was graced by Mr. Paul Jeyaraj, the College Executive Council (CEC), and few selected representatives. Message from the Principal Dear Friends, Greetings from Trinity! Pray you are well with God’s blessings. This morning we had the “commissioning and blessing of the new Abeyratne – Jeyaraj Building” in the presence of Mr. Paul Jeyaraj, the CEC [College Executive Council], and few selected representatives. This was a “soft opening” for the benefit of the students. The Grand Opening of this Edifice is scheduled for June 2022, as a part of the T150: Sesquicentennial Anniversary College Celebration. All of you will be invited for this mega event. We anticipated the commissioning of the facility due to the current lack of infrastructure and the felt urgency of having the honoured presence of our dear Mr. Paul Jeyaraj in person. In many ways it is day of great joy for us, as we gift another facility for our dear students – “by Trinitians for Trinitians”. I offer my prayers of thanksgiving for all of you, for your generous contributions, professional expertise, time, and good will. I look forward meeting you all at the Grand Opening. Please stay safe. Message from the Chairman “At the outset I want to thank His Lordship the Bishop and the Board of Governors for appointing me as the Chairman of the Trinity150 Advisory and Oversight Committee. On behalf of the rest of the Committee I convey my sincere appreciation to Mr. Jayantissa Ratwatte the outgoing Chairman for the visionary leadership he provided to Trinity150 A&OC since its inception. Thanks to his unwavering commitment to the Trinity150 project, I am happy to report that we have now completed the first two infrastructure improvement projects undertaken by my Committee namely the refurbishing of Alison House and the construction of a new classroom block. Alison House as you will see in the photographs is completely refurbished with all modern amenities, bathrooms, common areas, resident staff quarters all up to modern day standards of a boarding school which does not exist anywhere in Sri Lanka. This project cost approximately Rs. 65 million. As promised to the Trinity fraternity and the donors by the Committee at the time Trinity150 was launched, the completed project was handed over to the school in May 2021 and is now ready for occupation. The classroom block which consists of seven classrooms and other supporting facilities was completed up to modern day standards that kept up with the rest of the architecture of the school. This building which cost approximately Rs. 70 million was also handed over to the school in May 2021 and is now ready for occupation. Both these projects, costing approximately Rs. 135 million was built with the contribution from generous old boys and old boy associations both in Sri Lanka and abroad. On behalf of the entire committee of Trinity150, I wish to thank profoundly all those donors who contributed towards the Trinity150 funds to complete these two projects. At the time of writing this article I am happy to note that the Trinity150 Committee was able to raise a sum of Rs. 144 million from old boys and associations both in and outside Sri Lanka. The most recent contribution was a sum of Rs. 50 million received from a very illustrious family who were all proud products of Trinity College. The next phase of the Trinity150 infrastructure development project will be the construction of the new science block, refurbishing Napier House and giving a facelift to the surrounding areas including the dining room, kitchen and the quadrangle. The development of a new indoor sports facility to accommodate sports such as badminton, table tennis, gymnasium and a basketball court will be embarked upon simultaneously with the above projects or thereafter depending on the availability of funds and other logistics being cleared so that most projects envisaged under the original Trinity150 program could be completed by 2022 when the school celebrates 150 years. We will bring news as the projects progress. On behalf of the Trinity150 Committee I wish to thank all our donors, the architects Mrs. Rangaji Jayasekara, Mr. Channa Daswatte and his team, the engineer Mr. Vasantha Ratnayake who provided their services on a pro bono basis in designing and completing the construction of both Alison House and the classroom block. I thank my committee for their guidance and support, the Principal and his staff, the A&OC project staff Mr. Gemunu Abeyaratne and Mr. Sarath Ekanayake for all their hard work and commitment in completing the above two projects, and Last but not least the former Principal Mr. Andrew Fowler-Watt for proposing to launch the infrastructure improvement project to coincide with Trinity’s 150th Anniversary.” – Duminda Hulangamuwa, Chairman – Trinity150 A&OC Click the thumbnail below to view the Newsletter in PDF:

Dear All, The Board of Governors of Trinity College wishes to convey with regret, the resignation of Mr. Jayantissa Ratwatte from the Board of Governors and the position of Chair of the Trinity150 project with effect from 30th April 2021. His resignation is on the grounds of age, having reached 80 years a few months ago and his expressed wish to pass on the responsibilities of guiding the destiny of the School to a younger generation. We wish Jayantissa all that is best for the future and look forward to his continued interest and association with the College. The Board on behalf of the Principal and the entire school wishes to place on record its deep appreciation and gratitude for all what Jayantissa has done for the College and in particular for his erudite and mature advice and guidance in the last few years in the management of the School. His colossal stature as a respected Trinitian, will be sorely missed by the Board. We wish to make special mention of his unique brand of leadership of the Trinty150 project for which he laid the foundation and is now in progress. The charismatic role he played in mobilising the support of the Trinity family and Friends from all round the globe towards making the project a reality, is well known. In deference to an appeal by the Board, he has agreed to serve the project as a Senior Adviser and his continued association in an advisory capacity will no doubt be of immense value to the Trinity150 Advisory and Oversight Committee which will from 1st May onwards be chaired by Duminda Hulangamuwa (partner of Ernst & Young Sri Lanka) an old boy well known to the Trinity fraternity. The Board looks forward to your continued support to the College. Respice Finem The Rt Rev Dushantha RodrigoBishop of Colombo,Chairman of the Board of Governors, Trinity College, Kandy 25 March 2021
