アニメ展覧会 – A virtual Anime exhibition by the Japanese Language Society

It is probably for the first time in Trinity’s history that a group of students are presenting an exhibition on a virtual platform!

The Japanese Language Society of Trinity College, Kandy is proud to present its online Anime Exhibition 2020, an array of anime and manga artwork hand drawn, painted and graphically illustrated by students from grade 6 upwards.

The exhibition can be accessed below and we encourage visitors to view the exhibition on a desktop to get the most quality. If you are having issues with the interface below you can directly access the exhibition here.

If you wish to view the exhibition on mobile, you can download the ArtSteps app for Android/Apple.

A gallery of the artwork can also be viewed at the end of this post.

アニメ展覧会 Anime Exhibition 2020

From the organisers of the event

Anime and manga are forms of art that are somewhat overlooked and unpopular due to western values but are gaining traction, with some gaining an international audience with no bias of age, gender, or race. They include well-known and well-loved masterpieces like Naruto, Pokémon, One Punch Man, Attack on Titan, and the list goes on. The key is in its versatility, covering a wide range of media from manga to film in almost every conceivable genre.

The idea of an exhibition consisting of Japan- themed arts by the students had been around for a while with much expectations from not just students but teachers as well, but it was not put in motion due to the restraints of the pandemic this year. However, with the reliance on technology taking a significant place in 2020, it paved the idea of staging an online exhibition.

The Teacher-in-charge of the society had this to say about the exhibition:

“Anime and Manga are forms of art that many of our students have taken an interest in watching and sketching characters depicted in these arts. They had the privilege of improving their art skills when they were confined to their homes this year. We felt that we needed to showcase their wonderful art publicly so in return they would feel appreciated.

Most submissions were given to us by students from both Middle and Upper School and many not pursing Japanese as a subject.
Seeing their enthusiasm, I decided to get permission to host a virtual exhibition to showcase the talents of our young artists, which I was told is the first ever virtual exhibition held by the College.

I am elated to be able to present this hidden talent of our students. I admire the skills of our students who are not second to students in Japan, from where this art form stems. I wish them the all the very best.

I would like to make a special mention of Master Thambara Basnayake, Master Matthew Francis, and Master Malinda Abeyrathne for their efforts, without which this event would still be a pipe dream. Trinity College is blessed to have children of this calibre.

I further extend my thanks to Fr. Principal, the Vice-Principal as well as the Headmistress, and the Grade Heads, for their encouragement and the College IT Department for their technical assistance.

On a closing note, I regret that the exhibition was not open to the Old Boys who wanted to participate with their artwork. This event was meant for the benefit of the students at College. However, I am not averse to a collaboration event with the current and past students in the future.”

W.M.R. Kumari

The Society, known to most students as the ‘the Japanese Club’, is a fun-loving, highly motivated and intricate society here at Trinity and has seen significant growth since the introduction of Japanese language as an additional subject to the curriculum back in 2008. The Society, showcasing the diversity of Japanese culture, also displays the unification and beauty of the “日本” (Nihon) spirit present within us.

The members of the Society extending their heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Kumari stated, “We thank her for being our guide and mentor throughout this project, greeting everyone always with an ever present smile. Without her efforts and dedication towards the project we would have never been able to pull this off.
As the society goes from strength to strength, we hope to have many more exciting events in the days to come and may the same spirit that brought the club together stand strong and continue to a bright future.”
