In a sincere endeavour that brought together environmental advocacy and community service, the Interact Club of St. Bridget’s Convent, Colombo and Trinity College Kandy came together to launch “Project Evergreen,” a two-phase campaign aimed at creating awareness about climate change while fostering sustainable practices.
The project began on the 9th of May 2025 with a thought-provoking webinar conducted by Mrs. Amanthi Perera, a proud alumnus of St. Bridget’s Convent and an active voice in the field of climate advocacy. With over 100 participants joining in, the session served as a vital platform to discuss the challenges of climate change and the importance of building a greener, more resilient environment for generations to come.
Taking this message beyond conversation and into action, the second phase unfolded on the 25th of May at the grounds of Irugal Bodhi Maha Vihara. Over 200 avocado and lemon plants were donated to a women-only community union, empowering more than five women’s groups by gifting each member with two plants. The event drew the participation of over 100 individuals and was graced by the presence of the area’s Gramasewaka and the head monk of the temple. Special appreciation is extended to Mr. Janaka Kariyawasam, the Agricultural Officer of Mahakanda, for his support and collaboration in making this phase a reality.
The success of Project Evergreen was driven by the unwavering leadership of Umair Akram, President of the Interact Club of Trinity College Kandy and Charith Ekanayake, Secretary, with Damrith Gamage serving as the dedicated project chairperson. Their efforts were guided and supported throughout by the club’s staff advisor Mrs. Agra Rathnayake.
Project Evergreen stands as a testament to what can be achieved when young minds across cities miles apart unite with a shared vision for a greener tomorrow. Through awareness, action, and a deep respect for nature and community, this initiative has planted more than just trees, it has planted seeds of hope, unity, and responsibility in the hearts of many.
